About the Independent Correctional Centre Visitor (ICCV) Role

Independent Correctional Centre Visitors are responsible for monitoring prison conditions and ensuring the rights of inmates are protected. This position plays a crucial role in promoting fairness, transparency, and accountability within South Africa’s correctional system.

Successful candidates will work closely with the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) to investigate complaints, support inspections, and report on critical matters like safety, living conditions, and the treatment of inmates.

There are 56 positions available across five regions in South Africa. Below is the breakdown:

Northern Management Region (20 Posts)

Locations include Atteridgeville, Bethal, Kgosi Mampuru, Potchefstroom, Tzaneen, Barberton, Johannesburg (Medium C), Modderbee, Nigel, Leeuwkop, Middelburg, Witbank, and more.

Central Management Region (16 Posts)

Positions available in Bethlehem, De Aar, Edenburg, Frankfort, Groenpunt, Hoopstad, Mangaung, Vereeniging, and other centres.

KwaZulu-Natal Management Region (11 Posts)

Vacancies at Durban (Medium A & B), Umzinto, Estcourt, Kokstad, Eshowe, Sevontein, Stanger, Ncome, and Ebongweni.

Eastern Cape Management Region (6 Posts)

Opportunities in Port Elizabeth, East London, King Williams Town, Middledrift, Queenstown, and Idutywa.

Western Cape Management Region (3 Posts)

Posts available at Drakenstein, Hawequa, and Beaufort West.


Salary Package

  • Annual Salary: R85,620 (Level 05, 3/8th)
  • Additional Benefits: 37% cash in lieu of benefits

Who Can Apply? (Requirements)

To qualify, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Senior Certificate (Matric).
  • Basic computer skills and accuracy when handling reports.
  • Must be recommended or nominated by a community organization (letter not older than 6 months).
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be passionate about public service and understand Batho Pele principles.
  • Assertiveness and ability to work under pressure.
  • A valid driver’s license will be an added advantage.
  • Preference will be given to applicants living near the correctional centre where the post is available.

Job Duties

As an Independent Correctional Centre Visitor, you will:

  • Visit assigned correctional centres daily to engage with inmates and staff.
  • Record and report inmate complaints and concerns.
  • Monitor and document serious incidents such as deaths, segregation, and use of force.
  • Provide accurate reports on prison conditions and treatment of inmates.
  • Assist JICS officials during inspections and investigations.
  • Handle administrative tasks like data capturing, report writing, and complaint tracking.
