ARC Invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for their Farm Assistant Vacancies (5 Posts). The closing date for applications is 30 January 2026.
If you enjoy working outdoors, using your hands, and learning how farming really works, this opportunity could be a great way to start or grow your career. The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is looking for five Farm Assistants who are ready to work hard, learn new skills, and support important farming and research activities. This is a permanent job, which means long-term work and steady income for the right candidates.
This role is perfect for someone who wants to gain more experience in farming, fruit production, and basic farm maintenance while working with experienced supervisors and researchers.
The Agricultural Research Council, also called ARC, is a government-supported organisation that helps improve farming in South Africa. They do research, test new farming methods, and support farmers so that food can be grown in better and safer ways.
When you work at ARC, you are not just doing a job. You are helping to improve farming systems that many people depend on. This means your work has real value and helps communities.
As a Farm Assistant, your main job will be to help with different farm activities as instructed by farm managers and researchers. You will be working in fruit farming areas and helping with both farming and basic maintenance tasks.
You will assist with normal farm work such as planting, cleaning, moving materials, and supporting crop production. You will follow instructions given by supervisors and researchers.
You will use farm tools and basic equipment. You must also take care of these tools and make sure they are kept in good condition.
Some tasks will need physical effort, such as lifting, carrying, digging, cleaning, and building small structures. This is hands-on work, so you must be ready to work with your body.
You will be required to wear protective clothing when needed and follow health and safety rules at all times. This helps to prevent injuries and keeps everyone safe.
Farm work does not stop because of heat, cold, or light rain. You must be willing to work outdoors even when the weather is not perfect.
To apply for this job, you must meet these basic requirements:
You must have at least Grade 10.
You should have at least two years of experience or exposure to fruit farming or general farm work. This means you must already understand how farms work, even if it was not in a formal job.
The ARC is not only looking at your school marks. They also want to see that you can work well, follow instructions, and take safety seriously.
You should understand simple farming activities such as planting, caring for crops, and working in farm spaces.
You should know how to safely use basic farm equipment and simple machines.
If you have experience in plumbing, carpentry, or building, that will be an advantage. This can help with small repairs and farm structures.
You must be able to speak and write clearly so that you can understand instructions and report problems when needed.
You must know and follow safety rules. This includes wearing protective clothing and using tools correctly.
You must be reliable, willing to learn, and ready to work as part of a team.
This is a permanent position, which means long-term employment if you perform well.
This is a junior-level job, which is good for people who are still building their careers.
The salary is market-related, meaning it will match what is normally paid for similar work.
Preference will be given to designated groups in line with the ARC Employment Equity Plan.
Your application must be complete, or it will not be considered. Make sure you attach all required documents.
If you studied outside South Africa, you must include a SAQA evaluation report.
All appointments depend on passing a security check.
If you are selected, you will work for six months on probation. During this time, your performance will be reviewed.
If you do not hear anything four weeks after the closing date, it means your application was not successful.
The organisation has the right not to fill the posts if needed.
