Barloworld Equipment 10x Pre-Learnership Mechanical Assistant Programme

Barloworld Equipment invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for their Pre-Learner Mechanical Assistant Programme, offering ten available positions on a 12-month contract. This opportunity is designed for young people who want to start a long-term career in the mechanical and heavy equipment industry. If you have always dreamed of working on large machines and learning directly from experienced technicians, this programme could be the opening you have been waiting for.

Why This Programme Is Worth Your Attention

Many people struggle to enter the heavy equipment industry because they lack experience. This Pre-Learner programme is special because it gives you hands-on training, industry exposure, and real workshop experience even if you are just starting out. You get a full year to learn, practise, and understand how heavy earthmoving machines are inspected, maintained, repaired, and tested.

This programme can be your first big step toward becoming a qualified diesel mechanic, earthmoving equipment technician, or technical specialist in the future. With Barloworld Equipment being one of the largest and most respected companies in the heavy machinery space, the knowledge you gain here is valuable and recognised across the country.

What You Will Be Doing Each Day

Supporting Technicians With Inspections

You will assist qualified technicians in inspecting heavy earthmoving machinery. These machines are massive and require detailed checks to make sure they are safe and running correctly. By helping with inspections, you learn how machines operate and what problems to look out for.

Helping With Troubleshooting and Repairs

Another important part of the role is assisting technicians with basic troubleshooting, testing, maintenance, and repairs. You will not be expected to know everything on day one, but you will gradually learn how to diagnose faults, test components, and carry out simple repair tasks. This is where most learners gain confidence and begin building strong technical skills.

Removing and Installing Components

Heavy machines often need components removed, repaired, or replaced. You will help technicians remove and install parts in the workshop or at a customer site. This gives you practical experience with real equipment, tools, and safety procedures.

Assisting With Parts Ordering

You will help technicians request and order parts from the correct departments. This teaches you how to use parts catalogues, how to identify components, and how to manage stock correctly. This is a valuable skill because technicians depend on accurate parts management to complete repairs.

Handling Admin Tasks

Mechanics don’t only work with their hands; they also complete important paperwork. You will support technicians with service reports, labour bookings, parts returns, and expense records. Learning these tasks is important because good admin helps the workshop run smoothly.

Supporting With Machine Reports

You will help technicians prepare machine analysis reports and Machine Inspection Reports (MIR). These documents record the condition of machines and guide repair decisions. Learning how to collect information and write accurate reports helps you develop strong communication skills.

General Duties and Housekeeping

Workshops must always remain clean, organised, and safe. You will help with housekeeping, tool care, and general support. This teaches discipline and the importance of maintaining a safe working environment.

What You Need Before You Apply

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify for this programme, you must have:

  • Grade 12 or N3 with Pure Mathematics (minimum 45 percent)
  • Grade 12 or N3 with English (minimum 45 percent)
  • Grade 12 or N3 with Physical Science (minimum 45 percent)

These subjects are important because the role involves calculations, technical reading, and understanding scientific principles.

Added Advantages

Your application will stand out even more if you have:

  • N2 or N3 with relevant theory such as Motor/Diesel Theory or Electrical/Electronic Theory
  • Technicians for The World certificate
  • A Code B learner’s licence (light motor vehicle)
  • Strong literacy skills (reading, writing, and speaking)
  • Good numeracy skills

Having these additional qualifications shows that you already have some interest and background in the technical field, making it easier for you to learn during the programme.

Who This Programme Is Perfect For

This opportunity is ideal for motivated individuals who want to start a technical career but need training and exposure. You will succeed in this role if you are willing to learn, ask questions, follow safety rules, work in a team, and handle both practical and admin tasks.

If you want a career where you work with powerful machines, solve problems, and build respected technical skills, this programme is a great starting point.
