Bidvest Tank Terminals Plant Operator


Bidvest Tank Terminals (BTT) is now hiring a dedicated Plant Operator to join their Richard’s Bay Operations Team. What Does a Plant Operator Do?

As a Plant Operator at BTT in Richards Bay, your main responsibility is to keep the plant operating safely and efficiently during your shift. You will be responsible for overseeing the loading and unloading of rail tankers, road tankers, and vessels that carry chemicals. Your job is to make sure all these operations happen smoothly without any safety issues.

You will connect and disconnect pipe systems, make sure tanks are properly lined up for loading or unloading, and execute these tasks following strict safety rules. You will also help after maintenance work and check that all safety systems are working properly. Accurate record keeping and reporting are also important, as you will log all activities and note any irregularities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Load and unload rail tankers, road tankers, and ships according to safety procedures.
  • Connect and disconnect pipe systems safely for loading, unloading, or pipeline pigging.
  • Make sure tanks are set up correctly before any offloading or loading starts.
  • After maintenance, ensure equipment is commissioned properly before use.
  • Measure the levels of tanks by dipping, recording, and reporting these measurements exactly according to the procedures.
  • Keep daily logs and checklists of the plant’s activities and report any issues or deviations.
  • Support contractors when they work in the plant, ensuring safety rules are followed.
  • Participate in emergency response drills and firefighting activities when needed.
  • Conduct weekly deluge system testing to keep safety measures up to date.

Who Can Apply? Minimum Requirements

  • You need to have completed Grade 12 or a National Certificate.
  • Experience in plant operations in a chemical plant is preferred, with at least one year working in a similar environment.
  • You should have worked on an operational plant before.
  • Fluent English is a must because safety instructions and reports will be in English.
  • Basic computer skills are required to fill out logs and work with plant systems.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, including OSH Act, ISO standards 9001, 14001, and 45001, is important.
  • Fire fighting and emergency training experience is a plus.
  • You must be capable of working independently, with a high level of accuracy and urgency.

Skills and Knowledge That Will Help You Succeed

  • Knowledge of emergency procedures at Richards Bay.
  • Ability to understand and read technical instructions.
  • Basic understanding of the quayside operations, including rail and road logistics.
  • Familiarity with systems like SAP, Fuelfacs, SCADA, and IMS will give you an edge.
  • Good communication skills to work with team members and contractors.
  • Ability to stay calm and focused in emergencies or busy moments.

  • You must be a South African citizen.
  • You must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transport.
  • A clear criminal record and no outstanding credit issues are necessary.
  • You should be physically fit and able to work shifts, including nights and weekends.
