Who Can Apply?

To qualify for the City of Joburg Bursary Programme, applicants must meet certain criteria:

  • Selection is strictly based on academic merit.
  • Applicants must be studying or intending to study at an accredited South African tertiary institution.
  • The bursary applies only to undergraduate qualifications (programmes of at least one year).
  • Postgraduate qualifications are not covered.
  • Applicants must permanently reside in Johannesburg.

Students are responsible for securing admission at a tertiary institution before applying. The bursary can be renewed every year, provided the student maintains good academic performance.


What the Bursary Covers

The City of Joburg bursary is designed to ease the financial burden of studying. It covers:

  • Tuition and registration fees
  • Prescribed books and study materials

The total bursary amount is limited to R40,000 per academic year. This support ensures that students can focus on their studies without worrying about educational expenses.

  • South African ID document
