What Is This Internship About?

The City of Johannesburg has created this internship to help students get on-the-job training that is often required to complete their qualifications or to gain valuable work experience after graduation. This opportunity is specifically for Johannesburg residents who want to build a career in Intelligent Transport Systems within the City’s Transport Department.

You’ll work at the Scheduled Transport Operations and Control Centre located in the Old Mutual Building, 75 Helen Joseph Street. Over 18 months, you’ll gain first-hand experience with systems that help manage public transportation in the city. This includes working with Automated Fare Collection (AFC) technology, analyzing transport data, and helping improve how the city’s buses and transport systems operate.

What You Will Be Doing

As part of your internship, you’ll work directly with the AFC system and help ensure that everything runs smoothly. Here’s what your daily work might include:

  • Operating the AFC system terminals to manage data about ticket sales.
  • Receiving and analyzing sales data from AFC, station vendors, and buses.
  • Checking for problems in the system like faulty turnstiles or data inconsistencies.
  • Reporting problems and proposing solutions to your managers.
  • Writing daily, weekly, and monthly reports about system performance.
  • Working with Fare Analysts to compare revenue and expenses.
  • Assisting in preparing reports to evaluate the financial performance of the transport system.
  • Monitoring contracts, payment obligations, and adjustment formulas.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for this internship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a resident of Johannesburg.
  • Have completed Grade 12 (Matric), NQF Level 4.
  • Hold a completed NQF Level 6 qualification such as:
    • National Diploma in IT/Network and Communication (ICT),
    • Advanced Public Transport Management Systems (APTMS),
    • Data Analysis,
    • Automated Fare Collection (AFC).
