Department of Health and Wellness Opens Cleaner Vacancies

The Western Cape Government Department of Health and Wellness is inviting suitably qualified applicants to apply for Cleaner Vacancies (2 Posts) at public health facilities in the Western Cape. The positions are permanent, with one post available at Bothasig CDC and another at Elsies River CHC. The closing date for applications is 28 August 2026 at 5:00 pm.

This could be a good opportunity for job seekers who have cleaning experience, especially people who have worked in a hospital, clinic, or other health facility. The position does not require a high school qualification, as the minimum educational requirement is basic reading and writing skills.

Department of Health and Wellness Cleaner Vacancies

The Department of Health and Wellness is looking for reliable people who can help keep health facilities clean, safe, and hygienic.

Cleaners in healthcare facilities play an important role because proper cleaning helps reduce the spread of infections. The successful candidates will be expected to clean different areas, use cleaning equipment correctly, follow health and safety procedures, and support supervisors and other staff members.

These are permanent positions, meaning successful applicants will not be hired on a short-term contract.

Where Are the Cleaner Posts Available?

There are two Cleaner vacancies available at different health facilities.

Bothasig CDC

One Cleaner position is available at Bothasig CDC.

For enquiries about the Bothasig CDC position, applicants can contact Ms C Lloyd on (021) 818 0940.

Elsies River CHC

The second Cleaner position is available at Elsies River CHC.

Applicants who need information about this position can contact Ms J Isaacs on 021 931 0211.

What Are the Requirements?

Applicants must meet the requirements of the advertised position by the closing date and time.

The minimum educational requirement is basic reading and writing skills. Applicants should also have appropriate cleaning experience in a health facility.

Experience working in a hospital, clinic, community health centre, or another healthcare environment can therefore be useful for this position.

The Department is also looking for people who understand how to use cleaning equipment and cleaning materials properly.

Skills and Competencies

Applicants should have:

  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning equipment
  • Knowledge of cleaning materials
  • Ability to work with colleagues and supervisors
  • Ability to follow cleaning and safety procedures
  • Ability to perform physical cleaning duties

What Will the Cleaner Do?

The main responsibility of the successful candidates will be to help maintain a clean, hygienic, and safe healthcare environment.

The duties will include general cleaning and maintenance such as:

  • Dusting different areas
  • Sweeping floors
  • Vacuuming

  • Keeping cleaning equipment clean after use
  • Storing cleaning equipment safely
  • Managing cleaning materials and stock
  • Carrying out basic stock control
  • Maintaining good hygiene standards
  • Helping prevent the spread of infection
  • Supporting supervisors and other employees

Because this is a healthcare environment, cleaners must take their responsibilities seriously. A clean clinic or health facility is important for patients, visitors, doctors, nurses, and other employees.

Are You Prepared to Work Shifts?

Applicants should understand that this is not necessarily a Monday-to-Friday, daytime-only job.

Successful candidates must be willing to work 12-hour shifts and work after hours when required. This can include:

  • Night duty
  • Weekends
  • Public holidays
  • Overtime at short notice

Employees may also be required to work at other geographical Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities within the Northern/Tygerberg Sub-Structure when operationally required.

Applicants should therefore only apply if they are comfortable with the working conditions attached to the position.

Practical or Competency Assessments

Candidates may be required to take part in a practical assessment or oral assessment.

Shortlisted applicants may also be required to complete competency tests and other pre-entry assessments. One assessment may include a practical exercise to check whether the candidate can meet the technical and general requirements of the job.

An integrity or ethical conduct assessment may also be required.

This means applicants should be prepared to demonstrate that they can perform the actual duties of a Cleaner and work responsibly in a healthcare environment.

Employment Equity

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness follows the principles of Employment Equity.

Candidates with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Applicants who have a disability are encouraged to indicate this information where required during the application process.

Important Information for Applicants

Applicants should make sure that they meet all the advertised requirements before the closing date and time.

The Department may conduct additional checks after candidates have been shortlisted. These checks can include:

  • Security clearance
  • Qualification verification
  • Criminal record checks
  • Verification of previous employment
  • Other relevant checks required for the appointment

Applicants should also be aware that shortlisted candidates must be available at the venue on the date and time determined by the Department if they are required to attend an assessment or selection process.

Candidates should bring recently certified copies of the required documents. The certification should generally be not older than six months.

These documents may include:

  • Identity Document (ID)
  • Driver’s licence, if applicable
  • Relevant qualifications
  • Proof of registration with a relevant statutory body, where applicable

Failure to provide the required documents or comply with the instructions may result in the application being disqualified and not considered further.

No Payment Is Required to Apply

Job seekers should be careful of anyone asking for money in exchange for a government job.

The Western Cape Government clearly states that no payment of any kind is required when applying for any of the advertised positions.

Applicants should never pay a person who promises to secure the Cleaner position for them.

Closing Date for Applications

The closing date for the Department of Health and Wellness Cleaner Vacancies is 28 August 2026 at 5:00 pm.

Job seekers should not wait until the last minute to prepare their applications and supporting documents. Make sure all requirements are met and that the application is submitted according to the official instructions before the closing time.

With 2 permanent Cleaner posts, a salary of R144,024 to R169,656 per year, and additional government service benefits, this opportunity may be worth considering for applicants with suitable cleaning experience, particularly those who have worked in healthcare facilities.
