What is the Dis-Chem Dispensary Support Learnership?

The Dispensary Support Learnership is a structured training programme created to help learners gain both knowledge and workplace experience in the pharmacy environment. Learners will complete the Basic Pharmacist Assistant Course while being employed in a fixed-term role at one of Dis-Chem’s pharmacies.

During the learnership, learners will be registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as learner basic assistants. Once they successfully finish the course, they may be offered permanent employment as basic pharmacist assistants – opening the door to a long-term career in healthcare.

This is not just a temporary job – it’s a career pathway.

What Will You Do During the Learnership?

As a Dispensary Support Learner, you will work under the guidance of a qualified pharmacist while gaining hands-on experience. Your daily tasks will include:

  • Assisting customers by selling Schedule 1 medicines.
  • Helping prepare and mix non-sterile medicines.
  • Unpacking, stocking, and cleaning dispensary and OTC shelves.
  • Learning how to read and interpret prescriptions correctly.
  • Picking, packing, labelling, and checking medications.
  • Managing stock – including organising, cleaning, and checking expiry dates.
  • Providing information to customers to promote health awareness.
  • Assisting with medical scheme authorisations (for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology patients).
  • Following up with patients and handling call centre scripts and service calls.
  • Reporting stock shortages and discrepancies to the Dispensary Manager.
  • Receiving new dispensary stock according to company procedures.

This experience will prepare you for a professional career in pharmacy support.

To apply for the learnership, you must meet these requirements:

  • Attention to detail and the ability to solve problems.
