Minimum Requirements

To be considered for the internship, you must meet these requirements:

Essential:

  • Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
  • Completed BPharm 4-year degree.
  • Computer literacy (MS Office).

Advantageous:

  • Prior holiday work or work experience during your degree.
  • Familiarity with Unisolve and E-Scripting systems.

Key Responsibilities

As a Pharmacist Intern at Dis-Chem, you will work under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. Your duties will include:

1. Dispensing and Prescription Management

  • Assist with reading, preparing, and interpreting prescriptions.
  • Ensure accurate picking, packing, and labeling of medication.
  • Check for correct dosages and possible drug interactions.
  • Provide clear instructions to patients about how to use their medication correctly.
  • Capture prescription details accurately and verify patient information on the system.

2. Medicine Handling

  • Assist in the compounding, preparation, and packaging of medicines following approved procedures.
  • Help with the manufacturing of both sterile and non-sterile medicines under supervision.
  • Manage the distribution and control of stock, including Schedule 1 to Schedule 6 medicines.
  • Report low or out-of-stock levels to the dispensary manager.

3. Customer Service

  • Offer professional and friendly service to customers at the dispensary, self-medication counter, and front shop.
  • Provide health advice and promote safe medicine usage.
  • Follow up with patients on prescription tracking reports when requested.
  • Explain medical aid costs and differences between medical aid and cash prices.

4. Administration and Compliance

  • Assist with processing claims for medical aid submissions.
  • Correct any script errors rejected by medical aid systems.
  • Ensure accurate authorization for chronic, HIV, AIDS, and oncology medication.
  • Maintain customer profiles and keep records up to date.
  • Follow all Dis-Chem policies, procedures, and health & safety standards.

Skills and Attributes

  • Customer service focus with the ability to handle conflicts calmly.
  • Numerical skills for accurate dispensing and stock management.

  • Teamwork skills and willingness to help others.

Bonus Skills:

  • Experience in retail or FMCG operations.
  • Knowledge of family planning and complementary medicine.
  • Ability to speak a third language.

Work Conditions

  • Willingness to work retail hours, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Physically fit to stand for long periods.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transport.
  • Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) or hold a valid work permit.
  • Clear criminal and credit record.
