What You Must Have Before Applying

Essential Requirements

To be considered for this internship, you must have:

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • A completed BPharm degree (4-year)
  • Computer skills, especially MS Office

Advantageous Requirements

These are not compulsory but will give you an advantage:

  • Pharmacy-related holiday or part-time work during your studies
  • Experience with Unisolve and E-Scripting

What You Will Be Doing in This Role

This internship is designed to help you apply what you learned at university while being guided by registered pharmacists. Below are the main duties you will perform:

Working Under the Supervision of a Pharmacist

You will perform tasks within the scope of a post-basic pharmacist assistant, guided and supervised by a pharmacist. This includes:

  • Selling Schedule 1 and 2 medicines
  • Helping prepare, compound, and manipulate sterile and non-sterile medicines following approved formulas and procedures
  • Assisting with the manufacturing of medicines
  • Re-packaging medication
  • Managing, ordering, and controlling Schedule 1 to Schedule 6 medicines
  • Reading, preparing, and labeling prescriptions
  • Providing correct usage instructions for medication
  • Giving health-related information to customers

Learning the Full Scope of a Pharmacist

For educational purposes, you will also be allowed to practice all responsibilities of a pharmacist, under strict supervision. These include:

  • Interpreting prescriptions correctly
  • Capturing scripts accurately
  • Making sure patients’ details are correctly updated
  • Picking, packing, and labeling medicines while understanding dosages and drug interactions
  • Advising customers at the dispensary, self-medication counter, and front shop

Working With Medical Aids

Part of your responsibilities will include:

  • Processing medical aid claims
  • Helping customers understand medical aid costs
  • Fixing rejected scripts
  • Ensuring chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medicines are authorized properly

Stock and System Management

You will also:

  • Maintain accurate customer profiles
  • Monitor stock levels
  • Assist with stock counts
  • Follow stock control rules
  • Report stock shortages

General Duties

You will need to:

  • Follow Dis-Chem’s uniform and appearance policy
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards
  • Obey Health and Safety rules
  • Work retail hours
  • Handle risk stock safely
  • Stand for long periods
  • Have a valid driver’s licence and reliable transport
  • Be registered with the Pharmacy Council or hold a valid work permit
  • Have a clear criminal and credit record
