Understanding the Boilermaker Aide – Plant Role

This position is a 12-month fixed-term contract and is designed to support the Boilermaker or a nominated supervisor. As a Boilermaker Aide, you will assist with maintenance, repairs, and general support work on mining and plant equipment.

This role is hands-on and suited to someone who wants to learn more about welding, cutting, grinding, and equipment maintenance in a real industrial environment.


Minimum Education Requirements You Must Meet

To be considered for this position, you must meet the following basic requirements:

  • Grade 10 or Standard 8 qualification
  • Code 08 (B) Driver’s Licence

Having an Operative Course Certificate will be an added advantage, but it is not compulsory.


Experience That Will Strengthen Your Application

While experience is not strictly required, the following will work in your favour:

  • At least 3 months of practical, trade-related experience in a heavy industrial, mining, or plant environment
  • About 6 months of practical experience using gas cutting equipment and welding tools

These experiences show that you are familiar with basic engineering tasks and working conditions in an industrial setting.


Key Duties and Responsibilities You Will Perform

Supporting Equipment Maintenance

Your main responsibility will be to assist in ensuring that mining and plant equipment is available and reliable at all times. You will help with maintenance, modifications, and repairs on various machines and systems to support smooth mining operations.


Keeping Work Areas Clean and Safe

You will be expected to keep your work area clean and organised at all times. All tools and equipment must be cleaned after use and stored properly in the storeroom. You must also make sure that your personal toolbox and tools are always in safe working condition.


Safety and Risk Management

Safety is a top priority at Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine. You will be required to conduct risk assessments in your work area before starting any task. Lock-out procedures must be followed when required, and all work must be done according to safety standards.

You may work independently or under the supervision of the Boilermaker or Direct Supervisor, depending on the task.


Technical Tasks You Will Assist With

Your duties will include practical tasks such as:

  • Welding
  • Cutting
  • Grinding
  • Drilling materials

You will also help operate stationary and mobile engineering equipment such as conveyor belts, pump stations, compressors, fire suppression systems, and TMM machines.


Reporting and Equipment Handling

You must ensure that any defects or issues with tools and equipment are recorded and reported to the Foreman. Tools such as welding machines, gas cutting equipment, angle grinders, and drilling machines must be kept clean, functional, and used according to standard operating procedures and manufacturer instructions.


Breakdown Support and Inspections

When breakdowns occur, you will assist in attending to them immediately to restore equipment availability. You will help recondition components, test repaired equipment, and ensure everything is working correctly before handing it back for use.

You will also assist with first-level inspections and observation of mobile engineering equipment to prevent breakdowns, injuries, and production delays.
