EPWP Hiring Environmental Monitors at Agulhas National Park

The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for Semi-Skilled Environmental Monitor Vacancies (X3 Posts) within the Biodiversity Social Projects at Agulhas National Park. The closing date for applications is 09 October 2025. These positions are fixed-term contracts running until 31 March 2026, and successful candidates will report directly to the Section Ranger or Ranger Sergeant.

Location

The posts are based in Agulhas National Park, a remarkable protected area at the southernmost tip of Africa. This makes the role both exciting and challenging, offering exposure to diverse ecosystems, landscapes, and conservation work.

Requirements to Apply

To be considered for the position of Semi-Skilled Environmental Monitor, candidates should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 12 / NCV Level 4 qualification (Standard 10).
  • Interest in working in nature conservation and the environment.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and after-hours duties.
  • Good physical health and ability to carry out fieldwork.
  • Successful candidates must undergo a medical fitness examination.
  • Understanding of basic Health and Safety principles.
  • No criminal record (verification will be done by SAPS).

Additional skills that will be an advantage:

  • Computer literacy.
  • Basic Firefighting training.
  • Preference will be given to candidates between 18–35 years old.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental Monitors play a hands-on role in supporting conservation activities. Duties include:

  • Assisting with the management of tools, equipment, herbicide, vehicles, and stock control.
  • Carrying out in-field administration such as timesheets, health and safety checklists, logbooks, and reports.
  • Recording and monitoring resource management data.
  • Providing support and motivation to contractors and helping to resolve conflicts.
  • Supporting fire management activities.
  • Monitoring fences, performing basic maintenance, and clearing camp areas.
  • Ecological monitoring, habitat restoration, and alien species clearing.
  • Waste management reporting and assisting with recycling programmes.
  • Taking part in community and environmental awareness initiatives.
  • Assisting in general conservation activities as required.
  • Performing ad-hoc duties when necessary.

This position is physically demanding but highly rewarding for those who love nature and outdoor work.

  • This is an EPWP contract position ending on 31 March 2026.
  • The successful candidates will need to arrange their own accommodation and transport, as no official housing is provided in the park.
