What the Firefighter Role Is All About

As a firefighter within the Fidelity Group, your main responsibility is to respond to and manage fire-related incidents and other emergencies. You will work under the guidance and supervision of senior officers and the officer-in-charge, following strict safety and operational procedures.

Your work will include firefighting, emergency rescue, basic medical care, fire prevention, training, and equipment maintenance. Every task you perform supports the main goal of protecting people, property, and critical infrastructure.


Key Duties and Responsibilities Explained Clearly

This role involves many responsibilities, and each one is essential. Your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Emergency Response and Firefighting

  • Responding to fire incidents, rescue operations, and emergency humanitarian situations
  • Managing and controlling fires using approved firefighting methods
  • Responding to hazardous material (Hazmat) incidents
  • Carrying out rescue operations and freeing trapped or injured persons
  • Providing emergency medical care, resuscitation, and first aid to injured individuals

Equipment and Operational Duties

  • Operating firefighting equipment and machinery to extinguish fires
  • Driving and operating heavy and extra-heavy firefighting vehicles when required
  • Using specialised machinery to access buildings or rescue victims
  • Ensuring all firefighting equipment and vehicles are cleaned, tested, and maintained
  • Performing basic maintenance to keep equipment operational and ready

Prevention, Training, and Safety

  • Participating in regular training drills, simulations, and physical fitness sessions
  • Assisting with fire safety training for employees and clients
  • Conducting fire safety inspections and advising on prevention measures
  • Promoting correct fire prevention practices and corrective actions
  • Ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act

Administration and Reporting

  • Completing computerised occurrence logs and daily records
  • Filling in required documentation and pro forma reports
  • Participating in departmental health and safety meetings
  • Carrying out shift-related administrative duties as required by policy

Teamwork and Supervision

  • Working closely with team members, supervisors, and officers
  • Supporting line management and assisting with supervision when required
  • Communicating clearly during emergencies and routine operations

Minimum Qualifications You Must Have

Because this is a professional firefighting role, specific qualifications and certifications are required.

Essential Qualifications and Certifications

You must have:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) as a minimum school qualification
  • IFSAC accreditation
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter II certification
  • Firefighter II qualification
  • 2 to 3 years of firefighting experience
  • Valid Code C1 driver’s licence with PrDP
  • EMT certification
  • First Aid Levels 1 to 3
  • Basic Ambulance Attendant qualification

Hazmat training and experience are essential for this role.


Physical, Medical, and Legal Requirements
