What Does a Ramp Agent Do?

The job involves many duties that keep the airport and flights running without delays. Here are some of the main tasks:

  • Making sure all safety rules are followed, especially when handling dangerous goods like fuel or sharp objects.
  • Keeping the area around the plane safe and secure.
  • Communicating with the plane’s crew and ground handlers to get clearance for boarding passengers.
  • Watching closely as luggage and cargo are loaded onto and taken off planes.
  • Informing ground staff if there are any changes in the load or any special needs.
  • Helping to reduce delays by ensuring all teams, like baggage handlers and fuel suppliers, are ready when flights arrive or leave.
  • Checking safety around the ramp (the open area near the planes) regularly.
  • Keeping all vehicles on the ramp clean and filled with fuel.
  • Driving crew members to and from the plane if needed.
  • Making sure flights run on time and reporting any delays.
  • Handling crew requests like arranging clean-up services and making sure water and restrooms are available.
  • Coordinating with all service providers required for a flight, such as airport security and fuel handlers.
  • Conducting surprise checks in the baggage area.
  • Helping with heavy or oversized items like motorized wheelchairs.
  • Making sure there are enough staff members as per agreements.
  • Checking the ramp for foreign objects (FOD) that might be dangerous and reporting anything unusual.
  • Reporting and handling any problems that might disrupt flight operations.
  • Monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) like how quickly boarding gates close and equipment positioning.
  • Completing detailed reports for every flight and reporting incidents or irregularities.
  • Working with other departments to make sure flights depart on time.

What Are the Requirements?

To be considered for this job, you need:

  • A Grade 12 certificate or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years’ experience working in aviation or a similar field such as passenger services, ramp services, or baggage handling.
  • A valid Code 08 driver’s license.
  • No criminal record.
  • Knowledge about airport operations and how the airside works.
  • Good planning and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both speaking and writing.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions quickly.
  • The ability to handle several tasks at once and delegate when needed.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • A strong focus on customer service.
