How to Apply for a SASSA Food Parcel – Your Complete Guide

A step-by-step guide to getting official food relief — safely and correctly

If you or your family are facing temporary financial hardship and struggling to put food on the table, SASSA’s Social Relief of Distress (SRD) programme may be able to help. This guide walks you through exactly how to apply, what documents you need, and how to protect yourself from scams.

How to Apply

There are four official ways to apply for a SASSA food parcel. Choose whichever is most accessible to you:

💬WhatsApp: 0600 123 456
Select “SASSA” to begin

📧Email: grantenquiries@sassa.gov.za

📞Toll-Free: 0800 60 10 11
Free from any phone

🏢In Person: Visit your nearest SASSA branch

Visiting your local SASSA office in person is often the most direct and reliable method, especially if you need assistance completing your application or have limited access to a phone or internet.

Eligibility & Requirements

Who qualifies?

  • South African citizens or permanent residents
  • People facing temporary financial hardship or a crisis situation
  • Applicants not currently receiving other SASSA social grants (in most cases)
  • Approval is based on an individual assessment of your financial circumstances

Documents you will need

  • Your 13-digit barcoded South African identity document (ID)
  • Birth certificates for any children in your household
  • An affidavit or sworn statement describing your situation and why you are in need
  • Proof of residence (may be required depending on your application)

⚠️

Important Scam Warning — Please Read

There are many fake online forms, Facebook posts, and social media links falsely claiming to offer free food parcels or SASSA vouchers. These are scams designed to steal your personal information.

SASSA will never ask for your banking details or personal information through unofficial channels. Always apply only through the official contact methods listed above, or directly via sassa.gov.za.

If you come across a suspicious link or post, do not click it — report it to SASSA directly.

After Your Application

If your application is approved following SASSA’s assessment of your circumstances, you will receive either a food parcel or a food voucher. Relief is typically granted for a period of three months, though this may be extended in special or exceptional circumstances.

Keep your documentation handy and stay in contact with your local SASSA office to stay up to date on your application status.

For official information, always visit sassa.gov.za or contact SASSA directly.
