What Is a Boma Assistant at Kruger National Park?

A Boma Assistant works in a special holding area called a boma, where wild animals are temporarily kept for care, research, medical treatment, or relocation. Your main job will be to make sure the animals are safe, fed, healthy, and living in a clean environment.

You won’t just be sitting around watching animals. You will be active every day, helping with feeding, cleaning, maintenance, and assisting during important wildlife projects. This is hands-on work that supports real conservation efforts in South Africa.

These positions are based at Veterinary Wildlife Services in Skukuza, inside the Kruger National Park, and you will report directly to the Boma Supervisor. The job is graded at a Paterson B1 level.

Who Should Apply for This Wildlife Job?

Kruger National Park is looking for candidates who already have some experience with animals and wildlife. This means the job is best suited for someone who has worked with animals before or studied something related to nature or conservation.

To qualify, you should meet the following requirements:

  • Have 1 to 2 years of experience in the wildlife capture industry or in caring for animals in holding facilities
  • Have a Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
  • A National Diploma in Nature Conservation or Wildlife Management is an added advantage
  • Understand how animals should be treated according to wildlife and animal welfare standards
  • Be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and after hours when needed
  • Have a basic understanding of Occupational Health and Safety laws
  • Be in good physical health, as the job is physically demanding
  • Be able to speak and write clearly
  • A Code B or C1 driver’s licence will give you a better chance

It is also beneficial if you have skills in maintenance work like brickwork, plumbing, welding, carpentry, or fence repairs. Experience using tools like brush cutters, chainsaws, or tractors is also a big plus.

What Will You Be Doing Each Day?

As a Boma Assistant, your daily responsibilities will focus on animal care, cleanliness, and safety. Some of your main duties will include:

Animal Care and Feeding

You will provide food and water to the animals based on their specific nutritional requirements. This has to be done on time, every day, to keep them healthy and strong.

Keeping the Area Clean

You will clean the boma areas by removing animal waste, old food, and anything that could cause sickness or discomfort. Clean spaces are very important in animal care.

Animal Monitoring

You will check on the animals regularly and report any signs of illness, stress, or injury to your supervisor. This helps the veterinary team act fast if something is wrong.

Assisting with Wildlife Projects

During animal relocations, wildlife sales, or research projects, you may be asked to assist with handling and managing wildlife in a safe way.

Maintenance and Repairs

You will help with:

  • Fence repairs
  • Clearing excess vegetation
  • Repairing boma structures
  • Applying approved weed-control chemicals
  • Cleaning storage areas and buildings

Safety and Equipment Checks

If you see broken equipment or any safety risks, you must report them. You will also keep a checklist of animals held in the boma to help with daily monitoring records.

All work must follow Occupational Health and Safety standards, and safety must always come first.
