What Is the Mediclinic Nursing Bursary About?

The Mediclinic Diploma in Nursing is a 3-year full-time programme that leads to becoming a Registered General Nurse. During these three years, you’ll gain knowledge, skills, and real-world training to prepare you for a rewarding role in the healthcare field.

Here’s a quick look at what you’ll learn each year:

Year 1 Subjects:

  • Professional Practice 1
  • Integrated Science 1
  • Psychology and Sociology
  • Anatomy 1
  • Physiology 1
  • Nursing Science 1

Year 2 Subjects:

  • Professional Practice 2
  • Anatomy 2
  • Physiology 2
  • Nursing Science 2

Year 3 Subjects:

  • Professional Practice 3.1 (Management)
  • Professional Practice 3.2 (Management)
  • Nursing Science 3

Who Can Apply? Check If You Qualify

Mediclinic has made this bursary available for a variety of applicants. If you meet any of the following school qualifications and requirements, you can apply.

For Matric Graduates (After 2008):

  • Grade 12 certificate at NQF level 4
  • English at level 4
  • Life Science (Biology) at level 4 or Physical Science at level 3
  • Mathematics Literacy at level 4 or Mathematics at level 3
  • Minimum of 23 APS points (24 if you use Math Literacy)
  • Computer literacy (NQF Level 3) is a bonus

For Old Senior Certificate Holders (Before 2008):

  • Total marks of 950 or more in Grade 12
  • English: minimum symbol D on Higher Grade or C on Standard Grade
  • Life Sciences: symbol D (HG) or C (SG), or Physical Science: symbol E (HG) or D (SG)
  • Mathematics: symbol E (HG) or D (SG)
  • Computer skills will help your application

For National Vocational Certificate Holders:

  • English level 5
  • Life Sciences level 5 or Physical Science level 4
  • Math Literacy level 5 or Mathematics level 4
  • Minimum 26 APS points (27 if you use Math Literacy)
  • Computer literacy (NQF Level 3) is helpful

What If You Don’t Meet the Science Requirement?

Don’t panic. You can still apply if:

  • You’re 25 years or older
  • You have at least 5 years of experience in healthcare
  • You are willing to complete and pass a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) course
  • You submit a motivational letter from your employer (if working in healthcare)

Note: You can only RPL one subject, and you’ll need to pay a non-refundable application fee.


What Else Should You Know?

To qualify, you also need to:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Pass psychometric testing, an interview, and a health assessment
  • Be ready to travel to a nearby approved learning centre for some of your classes
