What’s the Job All About?

As a General Assistant at BME, your main job will be to support the blaster and truck operator in collecting explosives from silos and delivering them safely to blasting areas. You’ll also be responsible for keeping equipment clean and in good condition, and making sure that every job follows safety laws and company standards.

What Will You Be Doing Each Day?

Here’s what your workday will look like:

  • Work safely: Do a proper risk assessment with the blaster before starting.
  • Prepare the blast area: Help mark and block off the work zone as required by the client.
  • Inspect and measure blast holes: Check that every hole is drilled correctly and follows the plan.
  • Speak up if something’s wrong: If you notice a problem, report it and make sure it’s fixed.
  • Support the blaster: Help plan and carry out the blasting process.
  • Load equipment: Collect and deliver detonators, boosters, and accessories as needed.
  • Prime the holes: With supervision, carefully insert explosives into blast holes.
  • Clean up and maintain: Keep your tools, work areas, and vehicles neat and ready for the next job.

What You Need to Apply

You don’t need a university degree to qualify, but you must meet a few key requirements:

  • Matric (Grade 12) with Mathematics
  • Blasting Assistant Certificate (MQA)
  • 2 years of blasting assistant experience
  • Experience working in mining or blasting environments

This job needs someone who is confident, safety-conscious, and ready to work in a tough but rewarding environment.
