What Will a Rand Water Gardener Do?

The main responsibility of the successful candidates will be to help keep gardens, landscaped areas and surrounding facilities in good condition.

This includes regular gardening work such as planting, watering, weeding and pruning.

Gardeners will also need to prepare soil and look after plants so that landscaped areas remain neat and healthy.

The work can involve using different types of gardening equipment. Applicants therefore need to be comfortable working with tools and machinery used in horticulture.

Some of the duties include:

  • Planting and caring for plants
  • Watering gardens
  • Weeding garden areas
  • Pruning plants and trees
  • Preparing soil
  • Maintaining plants
  • Cutting grass
  • Operating lawnmowers
  • Operating brush cutters
  • Using hand tools
  • Using horticultural machinery
  • Applying fertilisers according to instructions
  • Applying chemicals according to instructions
  • Identifying plants and weeds
  • Identifying alien vegetation
  • Following water-wise gardening practices
  • Keeping landscaped areas clean and attractive

This means the job is suited to someone who understands basic gardening and is comfortable doing physical outdoor work.

Landscaping and General Maintenance Duties

The Gardener role also includes some work that goes beyond normal garden maintenance.

Successful applicants may assist with hard landscaping projects and other work around the site.

This can include working with:

  • Stepping stones
  • Gabions
  • Stone packing
  • Poles
  • Water features
  • Retaining walls
  • Other landscaping materials

Gardeners may also help with mixing cement and providing general maintenance support when required.

There may also be tasks involving the movement of materials. These include loading, unloading, packing and stacking materials.

Applicants should therefore be prepared for a job that can involve physical work throughout the day.

  • Count stock
  • Assist with asset control
  • Support floral displays
  • Help with decorations

Minimum Education Requirement

The minimum education requirement for the Rand Water Gardener vacancies is:

Grade 12 / Matric

Applicants should make sure that their CV clearly shows their Grade 12 qualification.

If you have completed Matric and also have relevant gardening or horticultural experience, make sure both are clearly listed on your CV.

Horticultural Experience Is Required

This is not an entry-level gardening opportunity for someone with no experience.

Rand Water requires applicants to have at least 6 months of relevant horticultural experience.

Your previous experience should ideally show that you have worked with garden maintenance, plants, landscaping, grounds maintenance or similar duties.

When preparing your CV, do not simply write “gardening experience.” Give some detail about the type of work you have done.

For example, mention if you have experience with:

  • Lawn maintenance
  • Planting
  • Pruning
  • Weeding
  • Soil preparation
  • Garden maintenance
  • Landscaping
  • Brush cutters
  • Lawnmowers
  • Gardening hand tools
  • Horticultural machinery

This can make it easier for the employer to see that your experience matches the position.

You Must Be Able to Use Gardening Equipment

Applicants must have the ability to operate a brush cutter and lawnmower.

You should also be able to use other horticultural machinery and hand tools.

This is important because much of the job involves maintaining gardens and landscaped areas.

If you have used this equipment in a previous job, make sure you include it on your CV.

You should also be able to use the equipment safely and follow the instructions given by the employer.

Skills Rand Water Is Looking For

Apart from the formal requirements, applicants should have skills that will help them perform the job properly.

Useful skills include:

  • Basic horticultural knowledge
  • Garden maintenance knowledge
  • Safe use of tools and machinery
  • Ability to identify common plants and weeds
  • Teamwork
  • Good communication
  • Following instructions
  • Safety awareness
  • Good physical ability
  • Customer-focused attitude

Working as a gardener can involve spending long periods outside and doing physical tasks. Applicants should therefore be comfortable with outdoor work and be able to handle the physical side of the job.

What to Put on Your CV

If you are applying for one of these positions, make sure your CV is easy to understand.

Start by clearly showing your Grade 12 / Matric qualification.

Then list your relevant work experience. If you have worked as a gardener, groundsman, landscaper or in another horticultural role, explain what you did.

It is especially useful to mention experience with brush cutters, lawnmowers, hand tools and horticultural machinery.

You can also include gardening tasks you have performed, such as planting, pruning, watering, weeding, soil preparation and landscaping.

Do not leave your relevant experience hidden in a long paragraph. Use short bullet points so that the person reviewing your CV can quickly see what you can do.

Three Gardener Positions Are Available

One important point about this vacancy is that three positions are available.

All three positions are for the Gardener role under the I HAY Band.

The workplace is Zuikerbosch, Three Rivers East, Vereeniging, Gauteng.

If you meet the Grade 12 requirement and have at least six months of relevant horticultural experience, check the full vacancy information and apply before the closing date.

Closing Date: 12 October 2026

The closing date for the Rand Water Gardener vacancies is 12 October 2026.

Do not wait until the last day if you already have the required documents and experience. Make sure your CV clearly shows your Matric qualification, six months or more of relevant horticultural experience and ability to operate gardening equipment.

With 3 full-time Gardener positions available, this could be a good opportunity for experienced gardeners and horticultural workers looking for employment in Gauteng.
