Rand Water invites suitably qualified applicants and nominations to apply for their Rand Water Board Members Vacancies (12 Posts). The closing date for applications is 31 January 2026. These contract positions are open to South African citizens who meet the required experience and leadership standards and are ready to serve a four-year term from 20 September 2026 to 21 September 2030.

Understanding Rand Water and Its National Role

Rand Water is one of the largest bulk water utilities in South Africa. It supplies water to municipalities, industries, and communities across several provinces. The organisation supports economic growth, public health, and sustainable development.

The Minister of Water and Sanitation is responsible for appointing Board Members to Rand Water. The Board provides strategic leadership, oversight, and governance to ensure the organisation delivers reliable, safe, and affordable water services.

Board Members help protect public resources, guide long-term planning, and ensure accountability in how the organisation operates.


What Does a Rand Water Board Member Do?

A Board Member is a non-executive leader who helps guide the organisation at a strategic level. You will not manage daily operations, but you will support executive management by providing oversight, guidance, and independent judgment.

Your main responsibility is to ensure that Rand Water operates ethically, responsibly, and in line with national laws and policies. You will help protect public interest while supporting the organisation’s long-term sustainability.


Main Responsibilities of the Board Role

Strategic Oversight

Board Members help oversee the organisation’s strategy, business model, and major policies. You ensure that Rand Water’s goals align with national water priorities and community needs.

Risk and Governance Management

You will review risks facing the organisation and ensure that proper controls are in place. This includes financial risks, operational risks, compliance risks, and environmental risks.

Compliance and Accountability

You ensure Rand Water follows all laws, regulations, and governance standards. This includes PFMA, King IV governance principles, and water sector legislation.

Board Participation

You will attend Board and Committee meetings according to the approved annual calendar. You will contribute to discussions, decision-making, and policy direction.

Support to Executive Management

You provide guidance to executive leaders while maintaining independent oversight. Your role helps strengthen leadership accountability and performance.


Minimum Qualifications and Experience Required

To qualify, candidates must meet strong professional standards:

Education Requirements

  • Minimum: Recognised Bachelor’s Degree at NQF Level 7
  • Preferred: Postgraduate Qualification at NQF Level 9 or equivalent

Professional Experience

Candidates must have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Engineering, science, water services management, environmental management, or construction
  • Corporate governance, compliance, commercial law, and risk management
  • Financial management, accounting, investments, supply chain, or digital technology governance
  • Large infrastructure project management and regulatory frameworks

Additional experience requirements include:

  • At least 5 years as a non-executive director
  • At least 5 years serving on Board Committees
  • At least 5–10 years at executive or senior management level
  • Experience working in boardroom environments and governance structures

Candidates must also understand fiduciary duties, governance laws, and public sector regulations.

Applicants must be South African citizens by birth and must have strong personal integrity and professional reputation.

Who Cannot Apply

Candidates will not be considered if they:

  • Are unrehabilitated insolvent
  • Have been convicted of serious dishonesty crimes

Remuneration Information

Board Members receive remuneration approved by the Minister of Water and Sanitation. Payments cover authorised duties and official engagements as a non-executive director.
