SANParks Field Ranger APU Vacancies

South African National Parks (SANParks) invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for their Field Ranger APU vacancies (3 posts) on a fixed-term contract ending March 2027. The closing date for applications is 07 May 2026. These positions are based at Addo Elephant National Park and are part of an important wildlife protection project.

Job Location

  • Addo Elephant National Park

This park is known for its rich wildlife, including elephants and other protected species. Working here means you will be surrounded by nature every day.


Minimum Requirements You Must Meet

Before you apply, make sure you qualify. These are the basic requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or equivalent
  • Valid Code B driver’s license
  • Basic computer skills (MS Office)
  • Basic Field Ranger Training certificate
  • Health and safety knowledge, including first aid
  • Physically fit and able to work in tough conditions

Additional Qualifications That Will Give You an Advantage

While not all are required, having these can increase your chances:

  • National Diploma in Nature Conservation
  • Certificate in Resource Guardianship (NQF Level 5)
  • K9 Handling Certificate (DH1–DH5)
  • At least 1 year experience as a K9 handler
  • Firearm proficiency (Self-loading rifle and handgun)
  • NQF Level 2 or 4 in Conservation Guardianship
  • Experience in clandestine operations
  • Off-road driving skills

These extra skills show that you are well-trained and ready for the demands of the job.


What Will You Be Doing?

This job is active, challenging, and very important. Your daily duties will include:

Law Enforcement and Patrols

  • Patrol areas on foot, even in difficult terrain
  • Conduct patrols using vehicles, boats, horses, or dogs
  • Help prevent illegal activities like poaching

Anti-Poaching Operations

  • Take part in operations during the day and night
  • Work overtime and flexible hours when needed
  • Support special missions, including camping deployments

Crime Prevention and Investigation

  • Issue fines and make arrests when necessary
  • Collect and handle evidence
  • Appear in court as a state witness

Canine (Dog) Support

  • Work with trained dogs to detect illegal items
  • Track suspects and assist in search operations
  • Take care of the dog’s health and training

Safety and Visitor Support

  • Help manage park gates and visitor access
  • Assist during emergencies and rescue operations
  • Ensure visitors are safe inside the park

Administration and Reporting

  • Record daily activities
  • Help map important areas for research and safety

Salary and Benefits

The salary is based on the Paterson B3 job grade. This includes:

  • Basic salary
  • Allowances
  • Additional benefits according to SANParks policies
