SAPS Student Programme Now Open – 5500 Posts! Matric or Diploma Can Apply – R4500 Monthly Stipend

SAPS Invites Suitably Qualified Applicants to Apply for Their Student Training Programme (X5500 Posts). The Closing Date for Applications Will Be Announced Soon.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is calling on young, dedicated South Africans to apply for its 2025 Student Training Programme under Reference Number: TRAI2526. If you’re between the ages of 18 and 35, have at least Grade 12, and want to start a career in law enforcement, this could be the opportunity of a lifetime.

With a monthly stipend of R4,500, this full-time contract position is more than just training – it’s the first step into the world of policing. 5,500 posts are available nationwide, making this one of the biggest recruitment drives of the year.

What Is the SAPS Student Programme?

This programme is part of the SAPS Act of 1995 and is designed to train new recruits who are physically and mentally ready to become police officers. During the programme, candidates will be trained in crime prevention, public safety, law enforcement, and much more. Once successfully completed, some candidates may be absorbed into permanent roles, depending on SAPS staffing needs.

Who Can Apply?

Before applying, make sure you meet these basic requirements:

  • South African citizen with valid proof
  • Between 18 and 35 years old
  • Grade 12 certificate or equivalent
  • Good physical and mental health – medical and physical tests required
  • Clear criminal record – no convictions or pending cases
  • Not previously dismissed from any government job for serious misconduct
  • Able to pass psychological integrity assessments
  • Able to speak and write in English and one other official language
  • Willing to work anywhere in South Africa
  • Willing to take the oath of office and serve the people

You must also:

  • Allow your fingerprints and background to be checked
  • Undergo security vetting and screening
  • Be ready for rigorous physical and academic training

NOTE: Visible tattoos when wearing a uniform are not allowed.

Who Gets First Preference?

Although all qualified candidates are welcome to apply, preference will be given to applicants who:

  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Have a three-year diploma or degree (NQF 6 or higher) in:
    • Criminal Law
    • Forensic Investigation
    • Policing
    • OR any other related field
  • Have completed Grade 12 with eligibility for:
    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Diploma
    • Higher Certificate study

This is a great chance for graduates and matriculants alike to enter a government career path.

What Will You Be Trained To Do?

If accepted into the programme, you’ll receive structured training in the Basic Police Development Learning Programme. Your responsibilities after training may include:

  • Preventing and fighting crime in communities
  • Maintaining public order and safety
  • Upholding the law and ensuring justice is served
  • Protecting people and property
  • Assisting with investigations and patrols

Important Notes for Applicants

  • Medical Conditions: If you have chronic illnesses or conditions that could affect your ability to complete the physical training, you may not qualify. Undisclosed health issues could lead to removal from the programme later.
  • Application Process: Only one application per person is allowed – the system will reject duplicate applications.
  • Past Employment: If you were previously dismissed from a government job due to dishonesty, violence, or substance abuse, you cannot apply.
  • Recruitment Process: Candidates will go through fitness tests, psychometric testing, medical checks, and interviews. Selection is not guaranteed, even if you pass all assessments.
  • Social Media & Vetting: SAPS will verify your background and social media activity to ensure you have no involvement in criminal or inappropriate behaviour.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

Whether you’re fresh out of high school or have a diploma or degree, the SAPS Student Programme is a life-changing opportunity to serve and protect your country while gaining valuable skills. With 5,500 positions open, this could be your best chance to enter the police service and secure a long-term career.

The monthly stipend of R4,500 makes this a practical option even if you’re currently unemployed. Plus, working in law enforcement is more than a job — it’s a purpose.

If you’re serious, focused, and ready to serve, get your documents in order and apply as soon as applications open.
