SMU is looking for energetic and trustworthy people to help keep their campus safe. As a Security Officer, your main job is to make sure that students, staff, and visitors feel safe while on campus. You’ll check access cards, patrol the area, prevent crime, handle emergencies, and keep traffic under control during busy times.
You’ll be reporting to the Chief Security Officer, and you’ll also get to work with a team of professionals who are all focused on safety.
What You Need to Apply

- Matric/Grade 12 certificate
- PSIRA Grade C certificate
- At least 3 years of security experience
- A valid driver’s license

What You’ll Be Doing (Your Daily Tasks)
1. Access Control Duties
- Make sure everyone who enters has a valid card or pass
- Help students and staff with access issues
- Check cars and people if needed to prevent theft
- Report anything strange to your manager or the control room
2. Patrol and Guarding
- Walk around key areas regularly to make sure everything is safe
- Watch for anything suspicious and alert the control room
- Respond fast to any emergency and help people get to safety
- Help the control room keep track of things through radios and CCTV
3. Preventing Crime
- Check buildings for open windows or unlocked doors
- Report broken fences, poor lighting, or other safety risks
- Keep areas safe until help arrives
- Do regular building inspections
4. Emergency Response
- Keep your radio on at all times
- Follow instructions from the control room
- Act quickly and wisely during emergencies
- Record everything you do in your pocketbook for reports
5. Traffic & Parking Control
- Help manage traffic and parking rules on campus
- Guide VIPs and visitors during events
- Patrol parking areas and keep cars safe
- Report issues like broken road signs or dangerous spots
6. Monitoring & Reporting
- Prepare daily or weekly reports about what’s happening on duty
- Talk with managers and other departments when needed
- Follow orders from your Line Manager
- Help improve the university’s safety culture and support its growth
