SGS invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for their YES Programme: Civil Engineering Learner vacancies (multiple posts available). This exciting opportunity is open to young South Africans who are ready to gain real workplace experience while building a strong foundation for a career in civil engineering. The position is based in Nelspruit, and interested candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, as applications are reviewed continuously.

Why This Opportunity with SGS Matters

SGS is not just any company. It is known worldwide as a trusted leader in inspection, testing, verification, and certification services. With thousands of offices and laboratories across the globe, SGS plays a key role in ensuring quality, safety, and reliability in many industries, including construction and engineering.

For young people who have studied civil engineering and are struggling to get work experience, this learner role can be life-changing. It offers hands-on exposure in real work environments, helping learners turn theory into practical skills that employers value.

This role is part of the YES (Youth Employment Service) Programme, which is designed to help unemployed youth gain experience and improve their chances of long-term employment.

About the Civil Engineering Learner Role

The Civil Engineering Learner position is aimed at individuals who are eager to learn, willing to work hard, and ready to follow safety and quality rules at all times. Learners will work under supervision and will be exposed to both fieldwork and laboratory work, giving them a balanced understanding of the civil engineering environment.

The role is based in Nelspruit, so applicants must be willing to relocate if they are not already living in the area.

Key Duties and Daily Responsibilities

Site and Workshop Responsibilities

Learners will be responsible for keeping work areas clean and safe. This includes cleaning up the site or workshop after tasks are completed or at the end of the day. All used materials such as tapes, containers, and other consumables must be removed to ensure a neat and safe workspace.

Safety and Quality Compliance

Following SGS quality and safety standards is very important. Learners must always follow the company’s management systems and report any issues, mistakes, or irregular activities to supervisors. This helps SGS maintain its high standards and protects everyone on site.

Field and Laboratory Work

Learners will take part in various civil engineering tasks, including:

  • Sampling and preparation of materials
  • Measuring densities and working on different layers and stockpiles
  • Handling concrete cubes and assisting with testing
  • Working with road surface tests such as DCP, sand patch, and ring and ball tests
  • Sampling asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregates
  • Performing calculations related to tests under supervision

This hands-on work helps learners understand how construction materials are tested and evaluated in real projects.

Teamwork and Discipline

Learners are expected to show discipline and professionalism at all times. They must follow instructions from site supervisors, laboratory managers, and regional managers. Being respectful, punctual, and focused is essential for success in this role.

Skills and Experience That Will Help You Succeed

While some experience is helpful, this role is mainly about learning and growing. However, the following will be an advantage:

  • Basic knowledge of sampling and material preparation
  • Understanding of fieldwork processes
  • Ability to perform calculations accurately
  • Willingness to do physical work and handle samples when required

Being physically fit is important, as the job may involve standing, lifting, and moving materials.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Educational Requirements

  • NQF Level 4 or Diploma in Civil Engineering
  • Good understanding of English (spoken and written)
  • Basic computer skills, especially Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

Personal and Legal Requirements

  • Must be a South African citizen with a valid SA ID
  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 30
  • Must be currently unemployed
  • Must have no criminal record
  • Must be willing to relocate to Nelspruit

Personal Qualities SGS Is Looking For

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good organisational skills
  • Interest in data analysis and research
  • Self-motivation and a positive attitude
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative

These qualities can help learners stand out and make the most of this opportunity.

Important Notes for Applicants

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If you do not receive feedback within two weeks after applying, please consider your application unsuccessful. This is a standard process and should not discourage you from applying for future opportunities.
