The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is inviting passionate and determined young South Africans to apply for the Weather Observation Learnership Programme 2026. This 12-month opportunity is perfect for anyone who dreams of working with weather, storms, and climate data. The closing date for applications is 7 November 2025, and the training will take place in Pretoria, South Africa.
If you’ve ever been curious about how weather forecasts are made or what it’s like to work behind the scenes in meteorology, this could be your big break.
The South African Weather Service is the country’s official national weather agency. It’s responsible for forecasting weather, tracking climate changes, and studying the atmosphere. SAWS also plays a key role in warning the public about dangerous weather conditions such as storms, floods, and heatwaves — helping to protect lives, property, and the environment.
Through this learnership, SAWS wants to train and develop a new generation of weather observers who will collect accurate data and help keep South Africans informed about changing weather patterns.
This opportunity doesn’t just give you skills — it opens doors to a long-term career in science, technology, and environmental studies.
The Weather Observation Learnership Programme runs for 12 months and takes place at the SAWS Regional Training Centre in Pretoria.
Learners will go through both classroom lessons and practical fieldwork. You’ll get to experience what it’s really like to record weather data, measure rainfall, and observe cloud movements — skills that are essential for accurate weather reports.
Once the training is completed, learners might be placed at one of SAWS’ regional offices across South Africa to continue gaining real-world experience. Because weather monitoring runs day and night, some shifts may happen outside regular working hours.
Learners are encouraged to have or work toward getting a valid driver’s licence during the programme (at their own cost), as it’s often needed for travelling to observation sites.
Teamwork, good communication, and computer skills are also valuable qualities that will help you succeed during this learnership.
Before applying, make sure you meet these basic requirements:
These subjects are important because weather observation involves both science and technology. You’ll need to understand how to collect, analyze, and report data correctly.
Your application will only be considered if you attach all the required documents. Make sure you include:
All documents should be clear and combined into one single PDF file before sending.

This learnership is more than just training — it’s a life-changing experience. You’ll gain hands-on skills, meet professionals in the meteorology field, and learn how to interpret and use real weather data. These are valuable skills that can open up careers in aviation, environmental science, and government departments.
If you’re a young South African who loves science, nature, and problem-solving, the Weather Observation Learnership is your chance to shine. With dedication and hard work, this could be the start of an exciting and meaningful career in weather and climate science.
Don’t wait until the last minute — prepare your documents now and apply as soon as possible. The South African Weather Service is ready to help you launch your career in meteorology.
