Purpose of the Programme

The Transnet Boilermaker Apprenticeship Programme is designed to equip apprentices with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on experience required to become qualified artisans.
Apprentices will receive structured training that combines classroom learning with on-the-job exposure to prepare them for independent and productive performance in the workplace.

Key Responsibilities (Position Outputs)

Upon completion, the apprentice is expected to demonstrate competence in:

Planning and preparing work sites, tools, consumables, and materials.
Using hand, power, and measuring tools effectively.
Manufacturing, assembling, and inspecting metal components.
Commissioning, modifying, and repairing metal structures and installations.
Conducting tests and inspections to ensure quality and safety standards.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following qualification pathways:

Option 1: N2 Certificate (with the following subjects)

Mathematics (Pure)
Engineering Science
Plating & Structural Drawing
Engineering Drawing (Draughting)
Metal Worker’s Theory
Plater’s Theory

Option 2: N3–N6 Certificate

Mathematics (Pure)
Engineering Science
Plating & Structural Drawing
Engineering Drawing (Draughting)
Mechanotechnology

Option 3: NCV Level 4 (Vocational)

Fundamentals (including English and Life Orientation)
Mathematics (Pure)
Vocational Subjects:
- Engineering Process
- Professional Engineering Practice
- Applied Engineering Technology
- Welding

Option 4: Technical Grade 12

Mechanical Technology (Welding and Metal Work)
Mathematics
Physical Science
Engineering and Graphic Design
Home Language and First Additional Language
Life Orientation

Additional Requirements:

Age: 18 to 35 years
Must be a South African citizen
Strong communication, analytical, and teamwork skills
Ability to solve problems effectively
