What You’ll Learn During the Apprenticeship

As an apprentice, you’ll work closely with experienced technicians and engineers who will guide you step by step. Your responsibilities and training will include:

  • Safety First: Weir follows a “zero harm” approach. You’ll be trained to follow all safety rules and keep yourself and others safe.
  • Hands-On Learning: Gain practical skills in operating and maintaining machinery. You’ll learn how to optimize plant systems and improve mechanical performance.
  • Technical Skills Development: Learn how to read and understand engineering drawings, identify symbols and machining instructions, and translate them into real work operations.
  • Precision Work: Practice using different measuring tools like micrometers, verniers, and thread gauges. You’ll work with lathes, milling, and drilling machines to perform turning, boring, threading, and tapering operations.
  • Mechanical Assembly: Learn to fit components using hand tools, align bearings and shafts, and complete hydraulic and pneumatic fittings.
  • Full Qualification: This is a 3–4-year apprenticeship programme that follows company and SETA standards. By the end of it, you’ll be ready to operate as a fully qualified Fitter & Turner.

What You Need to Apply

To qualify for this opportunity, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Education:
    • Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics and Physical Science.
    • N2 or higher in Mechanical Engineering (Fitting & Turning).
    • Having an N5 or N6 qualification in Engineering will be a big advantage.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Must be passionate about mechanical work and willing to learn.
    • Must be able to work well in a team and follow instructions carefully.
    • Must be safety-conscious and have a strong attention to detail.
