Programme Descriptions

Skills Programme – Fixed Term Contract

Eligibility:

  • Grade 10/11
  • National Senior Certificate (Grade 12/Matric)
  • N1 – N5, or Level 2 – 4

Purpose:

This programme provides structured experiential learning opportunities, offering practical exposure to candidates.

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) – Fixed Term Contract

  • Eligibility: National Certificate – N6 (WIL/In-service Training) from institutions of higher learning, along with a letter from the institution requesting WIL and academic transcript.
  • Purpose: This programme integrates academic learning with workplace application, a specific requirement to obtain a formal qualification.

National N Diploma/Diploma

  • Eligibility: Completed qualification from Further Education & Training (FET) Colleges or accredited academic institutions.
  • Purpose: A graduate internship programme designed for skills transfer.

Graduate Internship Programme (GIP) – Fixed Term Contract

  • Eligibility: 3-year Diploma/National Diploma, Advanced Diploma/B-tech, Degree, Honours, Masters, or PhD from a registered university or university of technology.
  • Purpose: Provides graduates with practical experience and skills transfer opportunities.

Learnerships (12 to 24 months)

  • Eligibility: Grade 12, with additional requirements varying depending on the type of learnership.
  • Purpose: Combines theory and workplace practice into a qualification registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Requirements and Eligibility

  • Eligibility: Unemployed candidates who meet the minimum requirements and reside permanently within the jurisdiction of Cape Town.
  • Preference: Given to graduates from universities, technical universities, colleges, and TVET colleges within Cape Town. Interns must not be enrolled for further studies coinciding with the internship period (except for PhD and Doctoral students).

Key Performance Areas

The City is dedicated to training numerous recruits on various programmes. This initiative aims to provide exposure and experience in different directorates within the City, enhancing employment opportunities in various industries.

Special Conditions

  • Study Enrolment: Students must not be enrolled for further studies coinciding with the internship programme training period (except for WIL, PhD, and Doctoral programmes).
  • Employment Guarantee: There is no automatic guarantee of employment after completing the programme.
  • Remuneration: Students may be involved in special projects and receive remuneration depending on budget availability. Stipends may range from R32.91 p/h to R51.73 p/h.

  • Application Process: Applications must be submitted online via e-Recruitment. No hard copy or emailed applications will be accepted.
  • e-Services Account: Create an e-Services Account on the City of Cape Town website to apply.

Submission Requirements:

  • Certified copy of your South African Identity Document/South African Citizenship (no affidavits accepted).
  • Recently certified copy of matric certificate/statement of results (mandatory).
  • Recently certified copy of your highest qualification.

Use any computer with internet access to apply (smartphones are not compatible). You can also use a Smart Cape computer at a City of Cape Town Library if you are a library member.
