What Is the Role of a Field Worker?

As a Field Worker, your job is all about helping people in your local area. You will be working in the ward you live in, so this is a chance to uplift your own community. You’ll be helping to share important information about HIV/AIDS, TB, and other health issues. You’ll support individuals and families, refer those in need, and make sure people know where and how to get help.

This job is perfect if you are passionate about health, people, and making a difference – even if you don’t have much formal training or work experience.


What You’ll Be Doing (Key Responsibilities):

  • Help build strong communities that understand and fight against HIV/AIDS.
  • Share health education to prevent new HIV infections through awareness and support services.
  • Offer care and emotional support to families affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • Help people who are on TB or HIV treatment stay on track with their medication.
  • Teach others how to live safer and healthier lives.
  • Encourage acceptance of people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Promote local government programs like:
    • HIV Counselling and Testing Services (HTS)
    • Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT)
    • Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
    • Anti-retroviral Treatment (ART)
    • Other health services available in your area
  • Identify and refer Orphans, Vulnerable Children, and Child-Headed Households who need help.

Do You Qualify? (Minimum Requirements)

If you have the basics, you could be hired. Here’s what they’re looking for:

  • Grade 10 or equivalent qualification
  • Basic HIV knowledge or training (not required but helpful)
  • HIV/AIDS counselling training is an advantage
  • Must be able to read and write
  • Able to communicate clearly with your community
  • Good at recording data (daily, weekly, and monthly)
  • Can write basic reports with numbers and words
  • Must live in Ekurhuleni, and specifically in the ward you will be working in (you’ll need to specify your CCC and Ward Number)
