Purpose of the Security Guard Role

Minimum Requirements to Apply

Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate
Grade C PSIRA accreditation
PSIRA registration
At least 3 years of experience in the retail security environment, such as shopping malls or warehouses

The following will be an advantage:

At least 1 year of previous experience in a similar security guard role

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Security Guard role at Dis-Chem involves a wide range of responsibilities. These duties are aimed at preventing crime, managing access, and ensuring safety at all times.

Key responsibilities include:

Remaining alert and vigilant at all times to identify suspicious behaviour
Conducting regular patrols of the premises to reduce security risks
Monitoring and controlling access for staff, customers, vehicles, and suppliers
Ensuring only authorised individuals enter restricted areas
Investigating and reporting any signs of damage, theft, or unlawful entry
Acting as a visible deterrent to prevent criminal activities and misconduct
Providing professional, friendly, and helpful service to customers and staff
Conducting access control searches of staff, suppliers, and merchandisers
Maintaining accurate registers and occurrence books
Cancelling staff purchases and checking declared goods
Supervising refuse removal according to Dis-Chem standards
Protecting company property from theft, damage, and dishonest behaviour
Remaining at your assigned post at all times while on duty
Reporting suspicious behaviour involving staff, customers, or suppliers
Being present and alert during opening and closing procedures
Ensuring all doors, windows, and taps are secured at the end of the day
Conducting regular personnel frisking and vehicle searches
Reporting incidents verbally and in writing to management
Contacting police or emergency services when required
Monitoring alarm systems and CCTV cameras
Assisting emergency teams during incidents
Managing evacuations and ensuring order at assembly points
Providing safety advice and security warnings where necessary
Responding quickly and correctly during crisis situations
Keeping accurate notes of daily activities and unusual events
Enforcing rules to prevent crime before it occurs
Performing additional duties such as answering calls or running errands when required

This role requires strong focus, discipline, and the ability to act calmly under pressure.

Skills and Competencies Required

To perform well in this role, candidates must have the following essential competencies:

Sound knowledge of PSIRA regulations
Fire emergency and health and safety training or exposure
Strong English communication skills (reading, writing, and speaking)

Ability to speak a third language

Special Conditions of Employment

Applicants must meet these employment conditions:

Must be PSIRA registered
Must hold a valid Grade C PSIRA certificate
Must be a South African citizen

Must have a driver’s license, own reliable transport, and PDP when deployed as a driver
