Eskom invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for their Graduate in Training – Town & Regional Planner vacancy. The closing date for applications is 12 December 2025.
If you recently completed your studies in Town, Urban, or Regional Planning and you are looking for a real-world opportunity to gain experience while working for one of South Africa’s biggest state-owned companies, then this opportunity is worth your full attention. Eskom is offering a Graduate in Training position that is designed to help young professionals grow, learn practical skills, and understand how planning works within large energy and infrastructure projects.
This role is based in Witbank, within the LimLanga Cluster, under the Department of Asset Creation. The main focus of the graduate programme is to train the selected candidate across different Network Planning Sections, helping them gain wide exposure to planning systems, land development processes, and regional layout designs that support Eskom’s infrastructure needs.
This is not just any ordinary job. It is a structured training programme meant to prepare you for a long-term career in planning and development. Eskom will place the selected graduate in real working environments where they will be guided, mentored, and trained by experienced professionals in the field.
You will be learning how to look at towns, regions, and communities and understand how Eskom’s network and power infrastructure fit into those spaces. This means you will develop skills in analysing land use, understanding development impact, and supporting sustainable planning decisions.
This kind of experience is powerful for a graduate because it combines theory (what you learned at university) with practice (what happens on the ground).
Eskom is searching for someone who is not only qualified on paper but also has the right attitude and mindset to succeed in a professional environment. To be considered for this role, you should have the following qualities:
You must be able to express your ideas clearly, both in writing and when speaking to others. In this role, you may need to share plans, give input in meetings, or communicate with different departments and stakeholders.
Town and regional planning involves data, maps, layouts, and technical drawings. Eskom wants someone who can quickly understand complex information and use it in a meaningful way.
Since Eskom operates in industrial and technical environments, safety is very important. You must be someone who follows rules, respects safety procedures, and always stays alert in the workplace.
This is a professional environment, and you will be expected to manage your time well, complete tasks on deadline, and work independently when needed.
Not everything in the workplace goes smoothly. Eskom needs someone who can stay calm under pressure, adjust when things change, and always come to work with a positive and ready-to-learn attitude.
There may be times when you need to perform physical tasks or travel to sites. You must be willing and able to do this. You also need to work well with others because planning is a team effort.
As a Graduate in Training – Town & Regional Planner, you will have important duties that help the planning department function properly. These include:
You will give your input and support on how land and space should be used around Eskom projects. This includes helping in the decision-making process for future developments.
You may be asked to communicate or work with local authorities, town planners, engineers, community representatives, and internal Eskom teams. This will give you real exposure to how planning happens at different levels.
You won’t just sit behind a desk. You will be part of real conversations that impact communities and development.
To qualify for this position, you must have:
This means even if you have just finished your studies and have not worked before, you still qualify to apply.
This is one of the biggest advantages of graduate programmes – they are built for people who need experience but do not yet have it.
Eskom follows strict rules when it comes to fair employment and diversity. The company is committed to creating equal opportunities for all South Africans. Preference may be given to candidates from under-represented groups as part of Eskom’s employment equity plan.
People living with disabilities are also encouraged to apply and will be supported where necessary.
It is also important to know that Eskom maintains a smoke-free working environment for all employees and visitors.
If you do not hear back from Eskom within 28 days after the closing date, it means your application was not successful this time. However, it is still encouraged to keep applying for future opportunities.
If you experience any challenges or need assistance with the application process, you can contact Eskom’s Candidate Support team via email at:
They assist both internal and external applicants.
This opportunity could be the beginning of a strong and meaningful career in town and regional planning. If you meet the minimum requirements and feel ready to step into a professional environment where your knowledge can make a difference, then this Eskom graduate programme might be exactly what you have been waiting for.
