What You’ll Be Doing

As a Firefighter Intern, your role will be hands-on, technical, and exciting. You’ll assist the Chief Fire Officer and the firefighting team to ensure safety across RDM sites.

Here’s what your day-to-day will look like:

  • Check Fire Equipment: Help run inspections and maintenance on portable firefighting gear to ensure everything is working and legal.
  • Risk Assessments: Assist in checking sites for fire hazards and help identify high-risk areas.
  • Emergency Standby: Be on standby during high-risk activities like weapons testing or explosive handling.
  • Assist in Emergencies: Help respond to real fire emergencies or incidents that pose a threat to the site.
  • Support Fire Drills: Join team training and fire drills to stay sharp and ready.
  • Vehicle Checks: Ensure all emergency vehicles are serviced, checked, and ready to move at any time.
  • Maintenance Oversight: Help coordinate servicing for hose reels, hydrants, sprinklers, and all fixed fire systems based on national safety standards.
  • Assist During Site Maintenance: Be on standby during technical or safety-sensitive maintenance projects.
  • Visual Equipment Inspections: Regularly inspect all fire systems visually to check for wear, damage, or missing parts.

What You Need to Qualify

This internship isn’t for everyone. It’s for individuals who are tough, committed, and willing to give 100% when it matters most. Here’s what you must have:


✅ Minimum Requirements:

  • National Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent qualification.
  • Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 Certification
  • Hazmat Awareness & Operational Training
  • First Aid Level 3
  • Physically fit and capable – You’ll be assessed for fitness, must be able to work at heights, in confined spaces, and under low visibility.
  • Code C1 Driver’s License – Required for operating emergency vehicles.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to work in high-pressure environments and stay calm under stress.
  • Willing to work standby duties, weekends, and overtime when needed.

🔥 Bonus Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Fire Technology (SAESI) – This gives you a strong advantage.
  • Prior knowledge or exposure to SANS 1475-1 servicing standards.
  • Familiarity with ISO Safety, Environmental, and Energy standards.
