What Is the Bana Pele ECD Registration Drive?

The Bana Pele ECD Registration Drive is a government-backed initiative to help all Early Childhood Development centres in South Africa register properly with the Department of Basic Education (DBE). In simple terms, they are making it much easier for creches, daycares, and similar centres to become legally recognised and supported by the government.

Why does this matter? Because registration is the first step to getting help from the government — such as funding, training, resources, and more.

Why Is This Important for Your ECD Programme?

The Department of Basic Education wants to make sure that all ECD programmes in South Africa are safe, offer quality learning, and provide good nutrition. By registering your centre, you’ll be helping the government understand how many centres exist, what support is needed, and where to focus attention.

But most importantly, you’ll be opening up opportunities for growth and support. This includes:

• Help from NGOs and community groups
• Government-approved training
• Better resources for your staff
• More trust from parents and guardians

Here’s How the New Registration Works – It’s Simple and Digital

The registration process has been made easier using technology. You can now register using a WhatsApp bot or an online form. The system is designed to be quick and user-friendly.

The process is split into three simple stages:

1. APPLY
You send in your application online or through WhatsApp. If your basic information checks out, you get a Bronze Certificate right away.
2. COMPLY
Next, you send more documents and get a visit to make sure your centre meets government standards (like hygiene, safety, and learning space). Once approved, you move to the next stage.
3. COMPLETE
If your site passes all the checks, you will be given a Silver or Gold Certificate, depending on your level of readiness and quality.

This new system is already being tested in Gauteng. Once the pilot test is complete, it will be launched across all provinces.

How NGOs Can Help

Many local non-profit organisations (NGOs) work closely with ECD centres. The government is now asking these NGOs to help centres register by:

• Assisting with filling out the online application (APPLY stage)
• Helping centres prepare for site visits and compliance (COMPLY stage)

This teamwork between the government and community groups ensures that even small and rural ECD centres get a fair chance to register and grow.

What Are the Government’s Main Goals?

The Department of Basic Education wants every child to attend an ECD programme that offers:

• Quality learning
• A safe and clean space
• Healthy meals

By pulling every ECD centre into the official system, they can better support children and teachers, and build stronger communities.

They also understand that not all centres are the same. Some are in urban areas, others in deep rural zones. That’s why the new system allows for different types of support, based on where you’re located and what you need.
