The role of an Assistant Buyer is a key part of the fashion retail world. You’ll be helping the main buyers by keeping everything running smoothly, making sure orders are placed on time, samples are managed properly, and that suppliers and teams stay in touch. Even if you don’t have a degree, this job could be your big break if you’ve got the right experience and attitude.


What Does an Assistant Buyer at Jet Do?

As an Assistant Buyer, your daily tasks will mostly include keeping things organized and making sure everything in the buying process works smoothly. Here’s a simple breakdown of what you’ll be doing:

  • Helping with admin work related to buying new stock.
  • Placing orders on time using the company’s systems.
  • Managing the sample room where all clothing samples are kept.
  • Using spreadsheets and reports to keep track of stock and orders.
  • Checking the quality of product samples.
  • Getting ready for presentations with your team.
  • Loading new products into the TFG system.
  • Talking to suppliers to make sure they give all the needed info.
  • Making changes to orders and telling the right people.
  • Helping customer service when there are product or pricing questions.
  • Watching over the order timeline to make sure items arrive on time.
  • Pulling reports about incoming stock and talking to suppliers for updates.
  • Helping move samples between stores and the production team.
  • Getting things ready for SWOT sessions (quarterly review meetings).
  • Doing comparison shopping to check what other stores are doing.
  • Preparing samples and images for sales reports and product meetings.
  • Supporting buyers with order placements and keeping the sample room tidy.
  • Helping with QA samples (quality assurance).

What Do You Need to Apply?

You don’t need to have a university degree, but having the right experience really helps. Here’s what Jet is looking for:

  • Matric (Grade 12), and a Higher Certificate or Diploma is a plus.
  • At least 5 years of experience doing admin work in buying.
  • Good understanding of how fashion retail works, especially the buying cycle.
  • Must know how to use a computer – especially Excel, Word, and email.
