Work Hand-in-Hand with Judges – Learn from the Best!

In 2025, the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Divisions of the High Court are looking for 15 Legal Research Interns10 interns for Gauteng and 5 interns for KZN.

Successful applicants will be hired by UCT and then placed (seconded) to one of these High Courts:

  • Johannesburg High Court
  • Pretoria High Court
  • Durban High Court
  • Pietermaritzburg High Court

Important: This is not a remote position. You will be working in-person at the courts, directly supporting Judges!

What You Will Do as a Legal Research Intern

Get ready to dive deep into the world of law and justice! Your duties will include:

  • Conduct Legal Research: Find important information from various sources (books, journals, databases).
  • Support Judges: Help Judges prepare judgments by researching legal topics.
  • Analyze Information: Read and understand complicated legal materials and summarize them clearly.
  • Attend Court Sessions: Sit in on court proceedings when asked by a Judge.
  • Write and Proofread: Prepare high-quality legal memorandums and help draft speeches, legal articles, and papers.
  • Manage Your Time: Handle multiple tasks at once, meet strict deadlines, and work under pressure without dropping quality.

Do You Meet These Requirements?

Before you apply, make sure you tick all the boxes:

Education:

  • You must have an LLB degree or another four-year recognized legal qualification accredited by SAQA.

Knowledge:

  • You must know how to use online research tools like Westlaw, LexisNexis, Jutastat, and Sabinet.

Skills:


  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Great communication (spoken and written).
  • Strong problem-solving and planning abilities.
  • Good decision-making skills.
  • Amazing time management — especially under pressure!
  • Creative and analytical thinking.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.

Stipend and Contract Details

  • Contract Duration: 10 months
  • Monthly Stipend: R9 000
  • Employer: University of Cape Town (UCT)
  • Starting Date: No later than 1 June 2025

Who Gets Preference?

Preference will be given to:

  • Candidates who already live in Gauteng (for Johannesburg and Pretoria High Court placements).
  • Candidates who already live in KZN (for Durban and Pietermaritzburg High Court placements).
