Kumba Iron Ore, a division of Anglo American, invites suitably qualified graduates to apply for their Professional-In-Training (PIT) Environment Programme 2025. The closing date for applications is 17 October 2025. This is a rare opportunity for young South Africans who are passionate about environmental science, sustainability, and mining innovation to kick-start a meaningful career in one of the country’s top mining companies.

About Anglo American and Kumba Iron Ore

Anglo American is a global mining leader with a clear vision — to reimagine mining and improve lives through innovation, responsibility, and sustainability. The company’s diverse portfolio includes diamonds, platinum, iron ore, copper, and other essential minerals that drive modern life.

With operations based in the Northern Cape (Sishen and Kolomela Mines), Kumba Iron Ore is committed to developing young talent and shaping future environmental leaders who can contribute to sustainable mining practices.

About the PIT: Environment Programme

The Professional-In-Training (PIT) Environment Programme is a three-year structured graduate development journey designed to prepare participants for registration with SACNSP or HPCSA. It combines hands-on training, site experience, and technical mentorship to help graduates grow into skilled environmental professionals.

You’ll work alongside some of the industry’s best experts while gaining exposure to environmental monitoring, compliance, and sustainability initiatives. The programme focuses on equipping you with the practical and theoretical knowledge needed to build a strong foundation in environmental management.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a PIT: Environment, you’ll take part in a variety of environmental projects and day-to-day activities, including:

  • Supporting the development and implementation of environmental procedures and management systems.
  • Participating in projects that enhance sustainability and environmental performance.
  • Conducting environmental inspections and audits to ensure compliance with internal standards and legal requirements.
  • Promoting and practicing strong safety leadership in all your work.
  • Applying risk assessment methods and implementing safety-critical controls.
  • Using environmental databases and analytics tools to generate accurate reports.
  • Helping design and deliver environmental awareness and training programmes.
  • Assisting with improvement plans for biodiversity, water, waste, air quality, soil, and land rehabilitation.
  • Preparing reports for management and participating in reviews and audits.
  • Engaging in cross-functional teamwork and contributing to environmental communications.

This programme offers you a chance to work on real-life environmental challenges while being part of a business that values innovation and sustainable development.

  • A valid South African driver’s licence.
  • The ability and willingness to work in remote locations such as Sishen or Kolomela Mine in the Northern Cape.
  • Medical fitness to work on-site in a mining environment.

What to Expect

This is a fixed-term contract for 36 months (3 years). During this time, you’ll rotate through different sites within Anglo American’s Southern Africa Business Unit, gaining exposure to various aspects of environmental management and mining operations.
