About the Lancet Laboratories Phlebotomy Learnership 2026/2027

A Phlebotomy Technician plays a vital role in the healthcare industry by drawing blood samples and collecting other specimens from patients or donors. These samples are essential for medical testing, diagnosis, and treatment planning.

Through this two-year programme, learners will gain extensive knowledge and practical skills in phlebotomy. The training includes theoretical learning, practical experience, and a final board examination.

Once you successfully complete the programme and pass the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) board exam, you will be able to register with the HPCSA as a qualified Phlebotomy Technician. This qualification opens doors for employment in medical pathology laboratories, hospitals, and blood donation centres.


Programme Structure

During the learnership, you will:

  • Attend formal training sessions, including lectures and practical training.
  • Complete and submit assignments to demonstrate your learning.
  • Write the HPCSA board examination at the end of the programme.
  • Collect venous and capillary blood samples and non-blood specimens for testing and donation purposes.
  • Apply safety protocols and housekeeping procedures according to health and safety laws.
  • Deliver excellent customer service while representing Lancet Laboratories professionally.

Requirements to Apply

To qualify for this learnership, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Education:
    • National Senior Certificate (Matric) with the following minimum subjects and pass levels:
      • English (Home Language or First Additional Language): Level 4 (50% – 59%)
      • Life Sciences: Level 4 (50% – 59%)
      • Mathematics: Level 3 (40% – 49%) OR
      • Mathematical Literacy: Level 4 (50% – 59%)
  • Experience:
    • 0 – 1 year of relevant work experience (not compulsory but beneficial).
  • Other Requirements:
    • Computer literacy.
    • Ability to work well with nervous or distressed patients.
    • Must be able to work a 42.5-hour week.
    • Willingness to cover your own accommodation, transport, and food expenses.

Important Note: Shortlisted candidates will undergo a pre-assessment test as part of the selection process.
