What Does a Stock Clerk Do at Lewis?

As a Stock Clerk, you’ll be the heart of the stockroom. Your main job will be to manage and record all incoming and outgoing stock accurately — from checking deliveries and monitoring stock levels, to making sure nothing goes missing and damaged items are returned to suppliers.

You’ll also support the store’s sales team, help with promotions and displays, and maintain a clean and safe work environment. This role also includes responsibility for large furniture items like beds, mattresses, and bedroom sets — so physical readiness and furniture-handling experience is a big plus.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

Here’s what your daily tasks will look like:

  • Monitor all incoming stock deliveries.
  • Check goods for damage or incorrect items.
  • Keep the storeroom clean, tidy, and organised.
  • Update all stock records to avoid losses.
  • Make sure shelves and storerooms are always stocked and ready.
  • Assist with displays, promotions, and general store upkeep.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and Head Office about new orders and stock issues.
  • File and manage paperwork for stock, returns, and deliveries.
  • Help track overdue or delayed orders.
  • Print and attach stock tickets and labels.
  • Conduct weekly and monthly stock checks.
  • Manage returned goods properly and make sure damaged items go back to the supplier.
  • Work with delivery staff to make sure items are packed properly and sent out on time.
  • Ensure stock doesn’t leave the store without the right documentation.
  • Provide feedback and report complaints quickly.
  • Help resolve customer service issues related to deliveries or faulty stock.

What You Need to Apply

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • A completed Matric certificate.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in English.
  • You must live within 15km of the job location.
  • Clear criminal record.

Extra Experience That Will Help You Stand Out

Although not required, the following will improve your chances:

  • South African citizenship.
  • Past work as a stock controller, clerk, assistant, or in a warehouse/furniture store.
  • Experience handling bedding and large furniture items.
  • 3+ years of experience in retail.
  • Strong organisation skills and attention to detail.
  • Age between 18 and 100 is acceptable.
