City of Cape Town Invites Unemployed Youth to Apply for Their Metro Police & Traffic Learnership Programme (X26 Posts). The closing date for applications is 8 May 2025.

Are you between 18 and 34 years old, currently unemployed, and looking for a real chance to build a career in law enforcement? The City of Cape Town is calling on suitable young South Africans to apply for their Metro Police and Traffic Learnership Programme. This opportunity allows you to earn a stipend of R34.91 per hour while getting trained in Road Traffic Law Enforcement and other public safety skills. With limited positions available, this 18-month programme will kick off on 1 June 2025 and end on 30 November 2026.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify, you must meet these requirements:

  • Have a Grade 12 certificate (you’ll need to show proof).
  • Be a permanent resident in Cape Town (must show proof).
  • Speak and understand English, and at least one other official language.
  • Be unemployed. EPWP staff and current students can also apply.
  • Be between 18 and 34 years old.
  • Be physically and medically fit for intense training.
  • Have no criminal record.
  • Own a valid Code B driver’s license (manual transmission only).
  • Be mentally strong and able to handle stress.
  • Have no tattoos visible while wearing the official uniform.

What You’ll Do During the Learnership

If selected, you’ll receive training in:

  • Road Traffic Law Enforcement (a certified programme).
  • Law Enforcement Skills (SP4/2012 standard).
  • Firearms and Ammunition handling (under legal training requirements).

Physical Training & Fitness Tests

To qualify, you must pass several physical fitness tests. These are tough but necessary to prepare you for the real job. Here’s what you’ll face:

  • 2.4 km run: Under 11 minutes for males, under 13 minutes for females.
  • Push-ups: 30 in 60 seconds.
  • Sit-ups: 30 in 60 seconds.
  • Dead weight carry: 100 meters with 25kg in each hand.
  • Tyre drag: Drag over 20 meters.
  • Shuttle runs: 10 x 20m in under 60 seconds.
  • Wall jump: Climb a 2.1-meter wall.
  • Motorcycle reach test and comfort swim.

Pregnant candidates cannot participate in the fitness tests due to safety reasons.

More Steps to Get In

If you pass the fitness part, there’s more:

  • Written test and interview.
  • City medical examination.
  • Fingerprint and criminal background check.
  • Compulsory drug test (done at a City facility).
  • Driver assessment.

Note: If you pass everything, you’ll still need to follow the training college’s rules, pass every part of the course, and be open to working anywhere in the City.

Special Conditions You Must Agree To

  • You must wear a uniform, work shifts, and be ready for any weather.
  • You can be placed anywhere within the City’s borders.
  • You must stay fit and undergo medical and psychological checks.
  • You must complete additional training when required.
  • You’re not guaranteed a job after the learnership ends.
  • You can’t work another job or business without written permission from the City.
  • If you fail to disclose health issues, you can be removed from the programme.

  • Have a computer or visit a City library using SmartCape computers (phones won’t work).
  • Upload these documents:
    • Certified copy of your ID (no affidavits).
    • Certified matric certificate.

Note: No late or emailed applications will be accepted.

What Happens Next?

If you’re shortlisted, the City will contact you via SMS or phone. You’ll need to bring your own workout gear and food for testing day. Only applicants who are drug-free, have no criminal record or pending cases, and meet all criteria will be considered.

You must be ready to work when needed and follow all City rules. Doing private business or having another job while in this programme is not allowed unless you get written permission from the City Manager.
