This could be your chance to start a new career or grow your skills in the poultry farming world.
Have you ever thought about working with chickens and helping produce the food we eat? If yes, this job might be just right for you. Rainbow is searching for two Assistant Farmers—one to help with laying hens and the other for rearing young birds. This is a chance to get hands-on experience in a real farm environment. Here’s what you need to know about the job, what it involves, and how you can apply.
The main goal of the Assistant Farmers is to help manage the farm, especially taking care of the birds, ensuring they are healthy, and making sure everything runs smoothly. Your role is very important because you’re helping the farmer and site supervisor keep the farm running efficiently. You’ll learn how to care for chickens, manage resources, and keep the farm clean and safe. If the farmer isn’t there, you’ll be the one in charge making sure everything stays perfect for the birds.
To qualify, you need at least a Grade 12 certificate—this is the basic school qualification. If you have some extra training or studies related to farming or animals, that’s a plus! You should also be physically fit because working on a farm involves a lot of walking, lifting, and being active. It’s important that you’re not allergic to feathers or dust since you’ll be around birds daily.
Having a driver’s license is helpful because it might be needed for moving around the farm or running errands.
Rainbow wants someone with around three years of experience in poultry or chicken farming. If you’ve worked with chickens in a supervisory role—meaning you helped manage other workers and made decisions—you’ll stand out. The more knowledge you have about taking care of birds, the better chance you have of getting the job.
Your daily work will include many different things to keep the chickens healthy and happy. Here are the main tasks:
Preparing the House for Chickens:
Before the new birds arrive, you need to get the chicken house ready. This means cleaning, setting up the right temperature, and making sure everything is perfect so the chickens can start growing healthy.
Chick Placement:
When the chicks arrive, you’ll coordinate with the hatchery and hatchery staff to place them in the house. It’s important to monitor their temperature and ensure they’re comfortable. You’ll also check that the chicks are healthy and record their vent and temperature readings.
Monitoring Bird Growth:
After the chicks grow into older birds, it’s your job to watch how they’re doing every day. You’ll check how much they eat and drink, monitor the temperature and humidity, and record if any birds die.
Ventilation Control:
Keeping fresh air flowing through the house is crucial. You will adjust the airflow settings to make sure the chickens get enough air, but not too much.
Water Management:
Clean water is vital for chickens. You will test the water quality before they start eating, flush the water lines regularly, and keep everything sanitized. Setting the right water pressure and nipple heights is also key.
Feeding the Birds:
You’ll manage feed deliveries, check feed levels, and make sure the feed is of good quality. Adjust feeder heights as the chickens grow and take samples of feed for testing.
Outsourced Activities:
When the chickens are ready to move to the next stage, you will help prepare the farm, coordinate with catching teams, and ensure all paperwork is correct. Good planning and communication are super important here.
Biosecurity and Hygiene:
Keeping the farm clean and safe is a top priority. You’ll follow procedures to prevent disease, practice good hygiene, and make sure everyone on the farm does the same. Vaccinating birds and stopping diseases from spreading will be part of your daily tasks.
Bird Health and Care:
Watching the chickens every day for signs of illness, and sending samples to labs when needed, will help keep the birds healthy. You will also record health and safety information, and check for pests like rodents.
You’ll keep track of everything: health records, feed intake, house conditions, and pest control. Keeping good records helps the farm run smoothly and ensures healthy chickens.
Even though this isn’t a managerial role, you’ll be involved in training staff, keeping daily records, and making sure everyone follows safety and health rules. If problems come up, you’ll help solve them quickly.
Regular checks on equipment and backup generators are vital to avoid surprises. You will test alarms and equipment regularly, and keep the farm grounds tidy.
Part of your role is to submit samples like blood, water, and dust to laboratories. You must also monitor environmental conditions like temperature and humidity, and manage vaccinations and pest control to keep the chickens safe and healthy.
If you enjoy working outdoors, have a love for animals, and want to learn more about poultry farming, this job could be perfect for you. Rainbow is looking for committed, responsible individuals ready to start a rewarding career in farming. Whether you’re just starting out or have some experience, this is an excellent opportunity to grow your skills and be part of a work environment that cares about the birds and the people who work there.
