What You Need to Qualify
Before applying, make sure you have:
- A Grade 12 certificate (matric)
- A valid Code 10 Driver’s License
- A valid PDP (Professional Driving Permit)
- The ability to read, write, and speak English
- Basic math skills for counting and handling money
- At least 2 years of driving experience in the FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) industry
- Experience in cash sales and delivering goods to customers is a big bonus
You’ll also need to be flexible with your time. This job may require you to work weekends, public holidays, overtime, and sometimes be on standby.
Your Main Duties – What You’ll Do Daily
This job is more than just driving. You will be:
Keeping the Vehicle Clean and Safe
- Make sure your vehicle is clean and safe every day
- Wear the right uniform and protective gear
- Check your vehicle for any problems before each trip
- Report any accidents or damage immediately
- Follow all road safety rules to keep yourself and others safe
Loading and Stock Checks
- Load the correct number of bread and other products
- Check that the stock is good quality before delivering
- Note any problems and let your manager know right away
- Make sure all items are packed safely to avoid damage
Managing the Van Assistant
- Supervise your van assistant (if you have one)
- Make sure they are presentable and treat customers well
- Help train them if needed
- Report any issues with their work to your supervisor
Sales and Customer Service
- Be friendly and helpful to all customers
- Deliver goods to stores and traders as per their orders
- Suggest more products to increase sales
- Help your company grow by finding new customers
- Report any problems or losses immediately
- Share useful info about the market and customer feedback
Handling Deliveries and Orders
- Make sure every customer gets what they ordered
- If stock runs out, let the sales team know immediately
- Collect new orders for the next day
- Bring back empty crates to the bakery the same day
- Sometimes help collect or drop off extra products or staff
Handling Cash and Paperwork
- Keep all cash and documents safe
- Put money in the vehicle safe right after collecting it
- Be careful about fake notes or robbery risks
- Make sure your paperwork is filled in correctly
- Balance your sales and money every day with your supervisor
Know the Competition
- Pay attention to what other brands are doing
- Gather information on prices, products, and new offers from competitors
- Report useful info to help the company stay ahead
Extra Tasks
- Sometimes you may be asked to help in other roles (like loading)
- Always follow health and safety rules
- Let your manager know if you’re feeling sick or unfit to drive
