What This Job Is About

The DTHF is looking to hire four (4) Research Assistants for an 8-week fixed-term contract starting on 1 September 2025. This role focuses on citation reviewing and data extraction.

In simple terms, your job will be to:

  • Review a set list of academic citations.
  • Download and read full research papers.
  • Extract key details and information.
  • Enter the data neatly into an Excel spreadsheet.

You’ll be expected to complete around 60 papers per week, working 27–30 hours weekly, at a pay rate of R215 per hour. The work can be done at the DTHF headquarters in Woodstock or remotely, as long as you have a stable internet connection.


Key Responsibilities

As a Research Assistant, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Downloading assigned academic papers based on given citations.
  • Reading and extracting important data points according to the project’s needs.
  • Recording information in a structured Excel spreadsheet.
  • Keeping track of your weekly progress (about 60 papers).
  • Meeting deadlines while working flexibly.
  • Reporting to the project lead if you face challenges.
  • Ensuring that all collected data is accurate and ready for review.

What You Need to Qualify

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • A background in biology, medicine, psychology, or a related field.
  • An Honours or Master’s qualification (can be in progress).
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • The ability to meet deadlines and work independently.
  • Solid Excel skills (especially data entry and spreadsheet management).
  • Knowledge of reference software like EndNote.
  • Experience accessing and downloading peer-reviewed research papers.
  • Strong written communication skills.
