South African National Parks (SANParks) invites suitably qualified and passionate individuals to apply for 2X Unarmed Environmental Monitor Vacancies based at the Thutong Environmental Learning Centre in Marakele National Park. The closing date for applications is 17 October 2025.

This is a great opportunity for dedicated local residents of Thabazimbi who are committed to environmental care, community service, and maintaining the beauty of South Africa’s natural heritage. Successful candidates will earn a daily wage of R208.00 as per the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) rates.

About the Position

The Environmental Monitor plays an important role in keeping the Thutong Environmental Learning Centre and its facilities in excellent condition. You’ll help with general maintenance, cleaning, and supporting educational and environmental activities that happen within the park.

As part of SANParks’ commitment to empowering local communities, this opportunity is open only to local residents of Thabazimbi, and selected candidates will stay outside the park during their employment.

This job is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, pays attention to detail, and takes pride in maintaining clean and welcoming spaces where visitors and learners can experience nature safely.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this opportunity, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 certificate (Matric)
  • Must be proficient in English; knowledge of another local language such as Setswana will be an added advantage
  • Friendly and people-oriented personality
  • 1–2 years of experience in housekeeping, hostel maintenance, or working in an education or hospitality environment
  • Basic coordination skills for handling groups and small projects
  • Willingness to work long hours, weekends, and public holidays when required
  • Must be willing to assist with ad hoc duties as needed

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for a variety of duties aimed at ensuring the Thutong Centre operates smoothly and remains a clean, safe, and educational environment.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Cleaning all areas of the Learning Centre, including kitchen, dining areas, dormitories, halls, passages, bathrooms, and open outdoor areas.
  • Keeping pantry and kitchen equipment clean and organized at all times.
  • Following health and safety and hygiene standards as set by SANParks.
  • Performing laundry duties for the centre’s linen and uniforms.
  • Inspecting and reporting any maintenance or safety issues to the supervisor and technical team.
  • Assisting with stock control for cleaning supplies and consumables.
  • Helping manage and track assets and equipment in the facility.
  • Supporting the coordination of departmental activities and projects within the park when needed.
  • Ensuring excellent customer service to all visitors and maintaining positive communication with guests and learners.
