The main purpose of the Claims Learnership is to train learners to correctly process and manage insurance claims within set rules and limits. Learners will be taught how to check whether claims are valid, assess responsibility, and help negotiate settlements, all while providing good customer service and managing costs responsibly.

All claims must be handled according to SASRIA policies and short-term insurance regulations. Learners will work under supervision and learn how important accuracy, fairness, and compliance are in the insurance industry.

Administration and Claims Processing Duties

Learners will be trained to assist with the full claims process, including:

  • Registering and opening new claims on the system
  • Capturing claims information and loading payments for approval
  • Checking new claims and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness
  • Making sure claims match SASRIA policy cover
  • Reviewing documents that support claim amounts and checking calculations
  • Maintaining claim records and document diaries on the IMS system
  • Updating claim reserves according to company policy
  • Following up on outstanding documents needed to finalise claims
  • Using judgment to assess claim risk and decide on the correct action
  • Approving claims within the allowed authority once all checks are complete
  • Escalating complicated or disputed claims to a supervisor
  • Making sure external service providers follow SASRIA procedures
  • Updating claim notes regularly so records reflect the latest information
  • Informing the underwriting department about missing cover, document issues, or changes in premium
  • Responding to customer enquiries in a professional and helpful way

These tasks will help learners understand how claims move from start to finish.


Working With Agents and Brokers

Another important part of the learnership involves communication and negotiation with agents and brokers. Learners will be exposed to:

  • Assisting with claim settlement negotiations
  • Communicating regularly with agents and brokers about claim progress
  • Updating all relevant parties on claim status and outcomes

Additional Tasks and Workplace Exposure

  • Assist with reasonable tasks assigned by the Line Manager
  • Support the team with general administrative duties when required
