Purpose of the General Worker Position

The General Worker is responsible for assisting artisans and technical staff while performing basic maintenance and support duties at the weather office and at remote observation sites. This role is practical in nature and involves both indoor and outdoor work.

The position is well suited to someone who is physically active, willing to learn, and comfortable working with tools, equipment, and maintenance tasks.


Key Responsibilities and Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to perform a variety of duties that support daily operations and long-term infrastructure maintenance. These responsibilities are important for ensuring that weather monitoring equipment and facilities function correctly.

Key duties include:

  • Assisting with the installation and inspection of remote weather observation sites
  • Repairing structures that house meteorological equipment such as masts, stands, and stays
  • Performing terrain maintenance, including grass cutting, weeding, and removal of litter
  • Cleaning indoor facilities at the weather office, including restrooms when required
  • Carrying out basic building maintenance tasks when necessary
  • Reviewing and supporting applicable Total Quality Management (TQM) processes
  • Monitoring and reporting on the use and condition of assets and infrastructure
  • Assisting with fleet management duties
  • Controlling and monitoring stock levels for maintenance materials and tools
  • Ensuring compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements
  • Attending training sessions as instructed by management
  • Sharing knowledge and skills with colleagues to support SAWS as a learning organisation
  • Participating in mentoring initiatives within the workplace
  • Actively seeking opportunities to learn new skills that improve job performance
  • Supporting staff during exhibitions, presentations, workshops, expos, and corporate events
  • Assisting during school visits and educational outreach activities

These duties require responsibility, teamwork, and a willingness to support different departments when needed.


Minimum Requirements to Apply

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered:

  • Matric / Grade 12 / NQF Level 2
  • Valid South African Driver’s Licence

The following will be an added advantage:

  • Welding training or experience
  • General handyman or maintenance-related courses

Candidates with practical skills and a willingness to learn will be well suited to this role.


Salary and Job Level Information

This position is graded at Paterson Grade B1, with an annual total package ranging from:

  • R116 259.00 to R156 204.00 per year
