βœ… Job Purpose

As a General Worker or Gardener, you will work under the supervision of the Gardens Supervisor. Your role will involve landscape maintenance, gardening, and general outdoor upkeep at UCT. You will be responsible for tasks like:

  • Mowing lawns, trimming plants, and maintaining flower beds
  • Planting new trees and shrubs to enhance the campus environment
  • Clearing litter and ensuring a clean, safe outdoor space
  • Operating gardening equipment such as trimmers, blowers, and irrigation systems

πŸ’‘ Note: Different teams will be assigned different tasks at the same time, such as mowing, planting, or cleaning.

πŸ“Œ Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must meet the following criteria:

πŸ”Ή Education & Experience

  • Minimum Grade 8 qualification
  • At least 2 years of experience in gardening, landscaping, or grounds maintenance
  • Experience with gardening tools such as trimmers, chainsaws, weed eaters, blowers, and irrigation systems

πŸ”Ή Technical Skills

  • Ability to safely operate and maintain gardening equipment
  • Basic knowledge of horticulture and plant care
  • Experience in soil preparation, planting, and irrigation

πŸ”Ή Personal Qualities

  • Physically fit and able to handle outdoor work
  • Attention to detail to ensure high-quality landscaping and gardening
  • Team player with a positive attitude

🌟 Advantageous (Not Required, But a Plus!)

Having any of the following will improve your chances of being selected:
βœ… Formal horticulture, landscaping, or gardening qualification
βœ… Knowledge of invasive plant species and heritage trees
βœ… Experience with organic gardening and sustainable landscaping practices
