uMngeni-uThukela Water invites suitably qualified unemployed youth to apply for their Water and Waste Water Treatment Learnership Programme 2025. About the uMngeni-uThukela Water Learnership

The Water and Waste Water Treatment Learnership Programme runs for 12 months and will take place at the Richards Bay and Jozini Water Treatment Plants, located in the North East Region of KwaZulu-Natal.

This comprehensive programme combines classroom training, hands-on experience, and practical assessments to ensure learners gain real skills that are in high demand.

By the end of the programme, learners will receive:

  • National Certificate in Water and Waste Water Treatment Practice (NQF Level 2)
  • A Portfolio of Evidence (POE) showcasing their skills and experience

A total of 20 learners will be selected for this intake, making it a highly competitive opportunity for motivated individuals passionate about water services, operations, and environmental management.


Minimum Requirements to Apply

To qualify for this learnership, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have completed Grade 12 (Matric) with passes in Mathematics and Physical Science.
  • Must be between 18 and 35 years old.
  • Must live in rural areas within uMkhanyakude District or uMdoni Local Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Must be genuinely motivated to build a career in water services or environmental management.
  • Applicants with qualifications at NQF Level 5 or higher will not be considered.
  • Youth living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required Documents for Application

Applicants must submit the following recently certified documents to be considered:

  1. Copy of Matric certificate showing passes in Mathematics and Physical Science.
  2. Certified copy of a valid South African ID.
  3. Proof of residence:
    • Village applicants must include a confirmation letter from their Traditional Authority Office.
  4. Mid-term matric report proving they studied within the same district of residence.
  5. Detailed CV.
  6. Motivation letter explaining why they should be chosen for the programme.
  7. Affidavit confirming unemployment status.

Important: Only complete applications will be considered. Missing documents will result in automatic disqualification.


Duties and Responsibilities of Learners

Successful learners will:

  • Gain practical experience working in real water and wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Learn to operate and monitor treatment equipment effectively.
  • Understand water quality standards and compliance processes.
  • Develop skills in environmental management, health, and safety procedures.
  • Complete assessments and compile a Portfolio of Evidence (POE) to demonstrate their competence.
