What You Will Be Doing as a Firefighter

As a firefighter, your main role is to respond to emergencies and handle fire-related incidents. You will be trained and guided by senior officers, but you must be ready to act quickly and correctly.

Here are your key duties:

Emergency Response Duties

Respond to fire incidents and emergencies
Rescue people from dangerous situations
Handle hazardous material incidents (Hazmat)
Provide basic medical care to injured people
Assist in emergency operations as directed

Firefighting and Equipment Use

Use firefighting equipment to control and extinguish fires
Operate specialised vehicles and machinery
Maintain and check equipment regularly
Ensure all tools are ready for emergencies

Safety and Prevention

Conduct safety inspections
Help prevent fire risks before they happen
Train others on fire safety practices
Follow all health and safety rules

Training and Administration

Take part in training drills and fitness exercises
Complete reports and records of incidents
Attend safety meetings
Assist with training other staff

Minimum Requirements You Must Have

This is not an entry-level job. You must already have the right qualifications and experience:

Grade 12 (Matric)
Firefighter II Certification (NFPA 1001)
IFSAC accreditation
2–3 years of firefighting experience
Valid Code C1 driver’s license with PrDP
Physically and medically fit
Clear criminal record

If you do not meet these, you will not qualify for the role.

Additional Qualifications That Give You an Advantage

To increase your chances, it helps if you also have:

Hazmat knowledge and experience
EMT certification
First Aid Level 1–3
Basic Ambulance Attendant training
Advanced driving experience
