What You’ll Be Doing Day-to-Day

Your main responsibility will be to make sure the ship’s engine and mechanical systems are running safely and efficiently. Some of your key daily tasks will include:

• Keeping a close eye on the engine room—watching temperatures, pressure, and other critical stats
• Starting and checking all major systems and machines onboard
• Fixing any mechanical problems quickly and safely
• Recording engine hours and keeping the maintenance log up-to-date
• Training junior crew members and helping them learn the ropes
• Managing spare parts and tracking stock
• Making sure safety equipment is ready and working at all times
• Helping with the transfer of fuel and ballast (used to balance the ship)

Do You Qualify? Here’s What You Need

To be eligible for this job, you must meet the following requirements:

• Grade 12 or N4 certificate
• Completed apprenticeship or cadetship (30 months)
• A Certificate of Competency as an Engineer Officer (as per the Merchant Shipping Act)
• 12 months sea time
• Must be able to live onboard the vessel on a 12/24-hour, 14-day rotational basis
• At least 6–12 months of experience working as a Marine Engineer Officer
