What Is a Call Centre Agent?

As a Call Centre Agent (also known as a Customer Service Representative), your main job is to help customers with their questions, problems, or concerns. Whether it’s over the phone or through email, your goal is to make every customer feel heard, helped, and happy.

You’ll act as the voice of the company, solving issues, sharing information, and making sure every interaction is professional, friendly, and helpful.

What You’ll Be Doing

Here’s a breakdown of your daily tasks and responsibilities:

Customer Service Duties:

  • Speak clearly and professionally with customers.
  • Use kind and friendly language in every phone call or email.
  • Offer solutions based on each customer’s unique needs.
  • Follow up with customers when needed and make sure they are satisfied.
  • Always stay updated on product info, systems, and policies.

Work Performance:

  • Stick to your schedule, including start times, breaks, and end times.
  • Be available for calls, emails, or other tasks as needed.
  • Stay safe and alert while on duty.
  • Report any issues, like broken equipment, to your manager.
  • Capture customer info and data accurately.
  • Follow all company rules, codes of conduct, and laws.
  • Solve customer issues quickly and within the expected time frame.
  • In a sales environment, meet and beat your sales and performance goals.

What You Need to Apply

You don’t need a fancy degree to get this job—but there are a few basic requirements:

  • Matric/NQF equivalent
  • At least 6 months experience in a Contact Centre or customer service environment
  • Comfortable using Windows, Excel, and Outlook
  • Good basic math skills (like adding, subtracting, and calculating percentages)
  • Fluent in English and at least one other official South African language (Afrikaans, isiZulu, or seSotho are preferred)
  • Able and willing to work rotational shifts, including weekends and evenings
  • A valid driver’s license is a bonus but not required
  • Basic understanding of the National Credit Act (NCA) is also helpful
